This picture disturbs me. The stark white background and surroundings. The pose of the subject looking down. The expression on his face.No joy or contentment there. The position of the legs away from the body. They all seem to scream uncomfortable loneliness more than solitude. Perhaps even psychiatric loneliness emphasised by the clinically white surroundings, relieved only by the bit of ornamentation seen in the bench. Overall a striking image of Loneliness. The image has impact.

Nice shot howard. Good critique. It does indeed convey a strong sense of loneliness. It almost "bothers" you. I think a touch less haze around the individual might make it look more blended into the scene, but overall a great job.

Time for me to diagree wih most of the other commetns I'm afraid! Firstly, it goes without saying that this is once again a superb high-key execution. Secondly (and this is where I disagree), to me the image doesn't convey loneliness, but rather someone in deep thought. To me, he's been sitting there for quite some time (perhaps waiting for a lift home) and is lost in his own thoughts, wherever they may be. He certainly doesn't look miserable or unkept. Just a middle-aged man enjoying an old-fashioned daydream. Either way, it's another exceptional piece of work.

Kind regards as always.

Howard- wonderful high key image with wonderful detail. I like his angled positioning, it leads me right into the image and directly to his face and his expression, the subject. I might like to see some more detail in the dark pant leg & shoe. The over all image is super. Golden rule composition.

I hope you don't mind me trying to figure something out. Because I'm studying light, I'm trying to figure out where the sun was. I'm guessing behind & upper left because the leg on the right of the image is in shadow, but then his other leg shadow under the bench indicates upper right?? Help me out here, give me the details. Did you use a fill flash? How you don't mind, lighting seems to be all consuming to me at present. This too shall pass.

Jayme: Here is the original image. If I recall, the sun was on my left shoulder. The dark shadow on the right pant leg was caused by a Gazebo (building) off to the right. Hope this helps.

Warren, you are closer to the truth. This gentleman was, in fact, waiting for his lady to set the timmer on a point & shoot camera on a tripod when I walked up. I saw this momentary day-dream and took a chance.

Reminds me of myself after lunch at work . . .

Howard, it's great to see the original to understand what how much tranformation took place!

I can't put my finger on why, but I really love this. He looks just like he could be the normal guy next door ... like ya' just have to know him. Great high-key, as usual!
