While approaching Gaudi's iguana-shaped foutain to shot some details,I noticed this little girl and decided to shot a candid. Thecomposition of the original did not please me a lot and, cashing on some great advise fromfellow photo.netters, I tried this new crop.

Does it work? Comparative feedback would be much appreciated. To get it done fast, I realise framing is quite horrible with parts ofthe iguana ways too close to the border, still I would like to knowwhether it is any good. Comments and suggestions are warmly welcome.

I think this is the better crop. Mind, I don't think there was too much wrong with the first one! I liked it's form, and being able to tell what the creature was, as well as the way the wall moved in and out of the frame. But this one has a little more ambiguity in it. I like the placement of her hand... and I would say that she's not so much disinterested, but rather is so familiar with the "monster" that she can have her little hand on one of his "fingers" casually and still eat ice cream. In other words - just as your title suggests, she's hanging out with a friend. :) This is a really sweet shot -- everything works here!

Salvatore, I think this composition works! As Kathy stated, it isn't necessary to include the entire iguana. It's obvious from the feet that this is a large reptilian. This tighter crop brings even more attention to the tender relationship between this sweet little girl and the beast. I'm glad you chose to keep this in color!

Dr. Mele, I agree with the others. This crop is an improvement. While the composition loses some of its complexity, this version makes up for it with a very simple, stream-lined design. The monster and girl have nearly equal billing (the oblivious girl clearly stationary as the seemingly unseen monster creeps into the frame). The diagonal railing (what's the architectural term for that?) both unifies the frame and separates the protagonists of the little drama.

Nice work, Dr. Mele.

was it Robert Cappa who said "if your picture isn't good enough, you haven't moved in close enough"? or, if I might add, to crop close enough... it is sound advice that usually works. and, in this case, astonishingly well done!

btw, I agree with Richard that the contrast could be tweaked a bit while keeping the essential lighting and look of the shot wonderfuly "natural".

Sal. With the crop it still looks like the 'animal' has his mouth wide open just getting ready to devour the little girl. Well seen and both compositions are great. Perhaps this adds more punch as it's not busy.

I've meanwhile deleted the original crop from photo.net, what broke the link in my request for critique.

The picture is posted here, for reference.

I do think that this tighter arrangement is far more effective, and, once more, I thank you all for your suggestions and insight.
