Suggestions?

I like what you were going for with the fading in photoshop, but I think it could be improved. Try duplicating the layer and then changing the blend mode of the top layer to multiply. Then apply a layer mask to that layer and use the paint brush to add or take away density. The results will be much more controlled and judicious. Other wise a pretty cute portrait.

Dodging is a little obvious.
