jayme 0 Posted February 17, 2005 Two of our grandsons, Tyson & Jake, playing on the floor in natural light. Changed to B&W, increased to high contrast. Is contrast too high? What about the burned out area? I'm not real comfortable with it. What about the composition & crop. Please feel free to offer critique, suggestions, whatever, I am looking for honest critique. b_adams 0 Posted February 17, 2005 As usual, you have captured another great moment beautifully. I like the comp and the contrast. The burned out areas are effective to me because it removes any distraction that may have drawn my eye away from the kids faces. I always look forword to your next image. Bryan Link to comment
jayme 0 Posted February 17, 2005 Hanna- Thanks for the input, I agree about the focus, not sure if it's baby movement, camera shake, or maybe I needed to increase the DOF. Most likely, baby movement! I have sharpened a tad and reposted. Not sure it's really any better, but worth a try. The burned out area was bright sunlight, probably should have moved them. Just trying something different. Thanks Bryan & Sean. Link to comment
donald_l_fackler_jr 0 Posted February 17, 2005 What caught my eye on this photo and made it stand out to me was the one grandson looking at the other with such curiosity. The burnt out hightlights to me add mood and character to this shot. I don't think I would have even opened it up if it wasn't for the striking hightlight contrast. I know this goes against the norm but I think it works for this shot. The blown hightlights seem to push me to the two faces and lead me into the photograph and help to form a frame within the frame. I seem to follow a path from middle top (highlight) to boys eye to baby to carpet to boys eyes again. I would have to say the blur is DOF from cheek to cheek and again it doesn't bother me because I am caught int he triangle formed by eye to eye to carpet. Sorry this is so long. Don Link to comment
jayme 0 Posted February 17, 2005 No problem Don, I get pretty long winded myself at times! LOL I am adding an even more hi-key example I have been working on. Check this out and see if this is "better" or "worse". Sounds like an eye exam! LOL And thanks for the explanation! Link to comment
jayme 0 Posted February 17, 2005 Here's the even higher contrast image I am working on. Link to comment

donald_l_fackler_jr 0 Posted February 17, 2005 I like the first one too. The higher key looses the glow that is formed along the older boys jaw making his face too flat and with out the dark spot on the carpet I am not drawn back into the frame. The triangle is still there but not as strong IMHO. Don Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted February 17, 2005 Not worried much about the out-of-focus bit. Looks like the baby moved and it does not bother me. The thing I like about this shot is the beautiful smooth skin tones. I prefer this one to the higher key version. I would like to have seen more of the babies face. Lower viewpoint? I couldn't get down there quickly these days :-) but you might be able to Jayme as you are still just a young thing. regards - Colin Link to comment
jayme 0 Posted February 18, 2005 Colin- LOL..... Thanks, 50 is still young! At least in my world! LOL Of course, at the moment Alice lives with me! Along with the Mad Hatter! :) Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted February 19, 2005 I like your first posting that is a little less high-key. The older boy's expression is what's making this work so well. You can't see much of baby's face. If only he had looked up a bit at the older boy, this would have been great. I do like what you've done with it, Jayme. Link to comment
