This castle occupies a strategic site at the borders of the kingdomsof Valencia, Castile, and Aragon It is built on the summit of a highridge defended by cliffs that make it practically immune toassault.

The eastern side of the enclave, the most vulnerable toattack, is defended by a double wall, while the southern side isprotected by the castle itself and a connecting wall that Islamic Thecastle is separated from the town by a ditch and a strong wallfortified with cylindrical towers Inside, al the foot of the principallower, is a small court of arms.

The castle?s remains arepost-islamic, although this hill was fortified all through history(coins dating from 2nd C. had been found) proving that it existed as a?castrum? under the Romans and later under the Celt Iberian tribes. Its importance comes from its position as key towards Valencia fromCuenca and Teruel.

Christians gained the place under Kings AlphonsusVIII of Castile and Peter II of Aragon.

In 1225 King Saint FerdinandIII came to Moya to receive here the feudal serment of its vassal theMoorish King of Valencia Zeit Abu Zayd. The Christian king gave thecity its own feudal charter, the "forum moiae". Its territory extendedto 2,750 square kms with a perimeter of 240 kms.

King Henry Idonates the place, in 1215, to the Order of Calatrava and reverts tothe crown in 1,319. The Catholic Queen of Castile, Isabella I, gavethe place to her dame Beatriz de Bobadilla and her husband Andrew ofCabrera with the title of Marquis of Moya, in 1480.

In the 19 th. C.Moya comes back to the history books but this is the onset of itsdoom. It participates actively in the guerrilla warfare against theFrench invaders the generals Gaulaincourt y Le Fr鲥. Later it takesside of Queen Isabella II in the dinastica wars and is razed down byGeneral Cabrera in 1.835.

The town of Moya is practically abandonedtoday, and therefore both the town and the castle preserve theirmedieval ambience.
