davidroossien 0 Posted February 13, 2005 The highlights are quite bright in the background. You probably could have used a soft ND grad to hold them back or maybe use a good amount of burn. I love the tones in the water--rich and creamy. The composition has style :o) Link to comment
jeremy freeland 0 Posted February 14, 2005 I'd agree with David about the highlights in the background - but the detail on the log in the right foreground is great. The composition is pretty - I like how it hangs on the sharp end to the foreground log. I also like the shutter speed decision - slow, but not so slow as to lose the circular wave formed upstream just below the hanging branches. Best, Jeremy. Link to comment
thomas_collins1 0 Posted February 14, 2005 Hanna, nice to see your work again. I'm torn about the contrast issue. Without the highlights in the upper part of the image, I'm afraid the image would go flat. I find that most successful image span the entire tonal range from whites to blacks. You've done that here. Perhaps you could have held back a stop on the brightest area in the upper left side of the image. Nicely done! Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted February 15, 2005 Thankyou all for your comments and suggestions. Dealing with the sunlight here was a problem. I considered using a polarizer but didn't want to slow the water down anymore so I forfeited reducing the brightness for the shutterspeed, as I was already using the smallest aperture. I visit this spot frequently but conditions are always different. One of these days I'll pull it all together. Just 10 more years of practice should do it. Link to comment
jeremy freeland 0 Posted February 15, 2005 10 more years? Riiiiight. More like 1-2, if that ;-) Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted February 15, 2005 What a nice place, Hanna. How long does it take you to get to all these nice places that you photograph? Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted February 15, 2005 Lannie, this is land which was originally owned by a Scottish immigrant and coal baron who built a home here. It later became a military college and is currently a university for mature students. The stream runs the length of the property and ends in the lagoon in this shot. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2099550 It's also where I took this pic. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3012395 And it's all a 10 min drive or 20 min bus ride away. Actually about a third of all my images were taken somewhere here (not all posted) at the lagoon, in the Japanese gardens or in the woods. It's a beautiful place to get into nature. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted February 20, 2005 A very satisfying composition. When I find a place I like or a shot that works and especially when the light has a wide rnge of brightness like here I find it helps to bracket the shot, try filters, try everything. The light here is beautiful though. Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted February 20, 2005 Hi Colin, bracket, bracket, bracket...yes I do alot of that. Under the extreme contrast of sun and shade here it was a tough one. I should go back at dawn before the sun hits this spot. I'm off to Oz for a month so hope to come back with pics of a different flavour. Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted March 31, 2005 Thanks T. I saw some familiar sites while scanning your photos so I see you've been in my neighbourhood. Will visit when I have more time. Link to comment
mcgarity 0 Posted April 6, 2005 I love the mood this evokes. Almost makes me want to go skinny dipping. But then that wouldn't be pretty atall. Seriously its a lovely photo. While I agree that the background highlights are a little bright, I like the composition and the overall tone. Link to comment
