Ring

oswegophoto

Camera on tripod, 0.5 meter from sidewalk, pointed up at moon in cloudy sky through "ring". Exposure about 6 sec, f/11. Cloned out one thin utility line & added border, but otherwise this is unmanipulated.

CR: You notice it immediately, of course - the outer space. And a direct compositional hit it is additionally! REgards

R E, Guy, Andrea, Dick & Richard, Thanks so much for your kind words (Richard: no foreground, no problem). The building houses a local community media production company, and features a large "wire" snaking along the roof, arcing across the façade and plugging into the wall over the door. Streetlamps, the nightclub across the street, lots of miscellaneous lighting for something I immediately wanted to shoot.

My band played two weeks at that nightclub, so I came prepared the second week with camera & tripod. You can get away with this sort of thing pretty well after midnight. ;-) The moon was good fortune, just took a little scooting on my bum on the sidewalk to get it while missing the overhead lines.

at first I thought this was a reflected light framed by a chair back- cooler even that it isnt.

Before opening the thumb, I was convinced that this was a PS job. Even if that was the case I would like it a lot, but knowing that it's not I can only say great job! I'm impressed by the way you've managed to control exposure here. Very cool stuff!

Hello Don, I like this photograph very much! Magnificent curves, framing, light and colours. Your approach from abstract detail to come to a figurative Saturn is beautiful. (hope that makes sense, I'm not quite sure about my English here!) Bravo! Laurent.

Knicki, Alexandre, Chris, Amanda, Laurent, thank you all so much for your encouragement. Alexandre, simple: I trusted the camera to start me off in the vicinity of correctness, then overexposed more than a stop, blowing out the moon, but getting the nearer objects I wanted to see (and bracketed, to be safe). Laurent, your English is excellent and eloquent. Merci et bienvenue. Und danke, e obrigado ...

I blush to receive praise from such praiseworthy photographers. Still my most pleasant surprise in photography; this print exceeded my expectations more than any other.

I'm attaching a shot I took from across the street (28-80mm zoom with all its distortion - not a lens for architecture) mainly to document the scene, which should help anyone who wants to visualize the actual objects in the photograph. I'm attaching it as a link, so those who don't wish to see don't have to (I've been criticized for that). I was seated to the left of their doors, pointed up and to the right.

An amazing achievement Don; I really don't mind the moon being overexposed, since this add up to the mystery of the image. Thank you for sharing this, and the picture of the buildings facade, with us. This is really an enticingly beautiful job.
