I like this close crop, Walter. Nice they were sitting near an (in-focus) diagonal branch; I think that adds to the composition.

You already know how I feel about these images... just wanted to add that this, imo, is the best version. Nice work Walter - VERY memorable...

This is great Walter! I love the color! I've used in NPH before(at a wedding) and I loved the results. Great dof and subjects:)

So cute and lovely title going with the mood of the picture. Good colors and exposure. IMO if you had used a little longer f lens or shot it in wide aperture the background would not have been much distracting. Here it looks slightly less out of focus and the eyes are drawn away from the birds. But this small bit is just my observation which in no way is decreasing anything from the high aesthetic value of the picture.

Kind regards.

Thanks for the comment Zafar, but if you read the Tech Details, I used a 400mm lens on a 1.4x extender (equivalent focal length of 560mm) and that was coupled onto an extension tube. The f-stop was f6.3 on an f4 lens. I can't open it up much more than that and still control the exposure (ISO 400 film). The problem is that my camera x-syncs at 1/30th second. Maybe next time I will put in an ND filter. Thanks again for stopping by. Regards.

Walter, with that much lens on, I'd have had trouble lifting it; it is amazing there's this much DOF. I only think it would be a serious problem, though, in B&W. Here, the subjects "pop" from the background so well due to their color. Enjoyed the shot and the title's whimsy.

Walter, this is a lovely photo. I saw in your details that you used fill flash. Was that on camera or low and to your right. I ask because the birds seem to be nicely uplit. I think you handled DOF as well as you could under the circumstaces. I'm fine with some detail in the branches. I think this might have benefited from cropping a bit off the top and the right. I also wish that both bird's eyes were fully open. It's just like them to not cooperate completely.

Laurie, it was off camera flash, a little lower and to the right. But there was also a lot of snow on the ground about five feet below this "happy" couple. The light bouncing up from that helped as well. Actually, the eyes of both birds are fully open. The distal bird is so plumped-up that his neck is buried in feathers. Take a look in the LARGER view and you will see what I mean. Thank you for stopping by.

And thank you to Lannie, Don, and Brad too. Regards

Ellen, please do not misunderstand me, for I appreciate the visit and comment. But it would be more helpful to me if you told me precisely what you found so beautiful about this. It would perhaps be even more helpful if you found anything that you did not like. Regards.
