comments? I'm reposting this because I think there are 3 people who I am reporting that give low ratings, and is quite questionable. They each give out very similar ratings, just registered their name in the last day, and don't have any photos of their own. Probably the same person...the names are:Gloria JPeter SimpsonRobert Watson...My friend got the same exact thing from these people...we're on to ya!

Excellent capture; But according to me, little bit more visibility of the trees just below the mountain would have been more attarctive. This is just my opinion, not a criticism. Best of luck.

Contrary to above, the trees are obviously 'dodged' to bring more visibility, and this results in making them look a wee bit fake.

Otherwise, I like the comp and the wonderfull colors.

agree with Scott. The dodging is apparent. In this situation you have two options.

1) Go with the correct exposure on the area of interest and let the shadows fall where they may. This often was the standby rule for several difficult exposure situations with film photographers.

2) Use a graduated ND filter (in this situation you very well could have successfully)

3) Since you are shooting digital use a tripod and shoot for both the highlights and shadows. Then combine them in post production.

I think the ND filter would have been the way to go unless you're more comfortable with digital post production work.

Your right that my best choice should have been to use a GND Filter. A friend and fellow photographer who shot this right beside me, had used a 3 and a 2 stop for this. It turned out much better than mine. I layered two of the same image, but with a 2 stop changing of the exposure. Even still, I had to perform some burning to bring out more detail in the trees, and that turned out less than optimal. I think my only option here is to do what you say and let the shadows fall where they may. Thanks again for your comments!

VERY beautiful lighting, super shades of color and composition

The light on the mountain is incredible. Were the shadows in the trees so deep ? Could you attach the original version so we can compare ? Best regards. Peter

I love this image. Should we really worry and poison our peace by someone, who deliberately rates low?Let him do, what he feels like. An excellent or very good image, does not really depend on our personal whims and fancy. This is my opinion only.

IMHO it is an excellent choice of composition: Five "layers" of nature and each has a different color and texture: plain of withered grainy light brown grass, green vertical tall trees, pyramid-shape mountain covered with white snow, sunny orange amorphous clouds and blue sky. Superb!!!

I love it.

So, I am new to this site and am wondering what do ratings really matter?? is there some reward if your average rating is higher than anothers?? And if you don't agree with the rating isn't that what really matters anyway? this is a serious question, I was just wondering if the rating makes any difference--(I don't rate photos, numbers seem empty to me.)--nice shot of Mt Hood

Actually, if you have a great photo, you can get some visibility. I've gotten contacted by a few publishers who have seen my photo at the top of the ratings for the 3 days. It also gives me an acurate feeling for how my photos are accepted by a broad range of people. Some people play some wierd game when they rate really low to someone...and they don't have any photos up themselves. The three culprits here all signed up within 24 hours of eachother and gave out the exact number of ratings. There's something fishy there...

Rick,

So the real question is, when are you going to get a big old 4x5 or even 8x10? I think you'd really enjoy it!

Let me know if you ever want to borrow one.

Agree that the trees look a little too bright, but it's an amazing piece of work and well deserved.
