I wanted to create an image that reflected the coldest Jan 1st in Hong Kong for 43 years. This picture possibly works better as a 'Portrait.'

All constructive feedback appreciated!

I think it works fine no matter what you call it. This is a great expressive portrait of a beautiful young woman that truly works well in black and white. I am certain you would have had far too much warmth radiating in color.

Yes, it really conveys the feeling of cold, even her look is rather cool. BW definetely is the right choice! I also like the negative space behind her, and the short space in the direction she's looking, this together with the look on her face really creates a cold and rejecting feeling. (jeez, I think the problem of expressing my thoughts in english really lies in the family). I hope you see what I mean...

It is very humbling that two people who I respect for their mastery of Black and White should be the first (and as yet, only) to comment on this! This is one of these shots I like. I don't dislike any of my shots but some are taken solely for fun. This was a more serious attempt at creating something.... well.... serious!

I am glad you both like it. Thanks a lot!

PS. Guy, What languages are you familiar with, other than 'Flemish?'

Close, but not quite.... :-)

It's Luxemburgish, not Flemish (which is REALLY different).

Other than that, it's French, German, and English

David, this is beautifully done. I'm partial to photos that tell a story with minimal elements. I love the negative space - that she's facing out of the frame really adds to the "attitude". Based on this photo, this is one self assured woman! I have a tiny nit-pik that I hesitate to mention. The top of her head is just touching the edge of the frame. I might have allowed just a little sliver of space. It doesn't really detract from the photo. If it did, I'm sure Owen, whose eye is much keener than mine, would have mentioned it.

Laurie, I almost didn't respond to you. I was too busy basking in the warmth that your comment generated. Thanks a lot!

What you say about the photograph is exactly how I see it!

Your point about the head is noted! If it had bothered me I would not have posted it. If you look at the model as a divider of the frame (which is the way I see it) then maybe you will 'appreciate' it more..... then again.... maybe you wont! Thanks again! Your comment is appreciated!

David, I'm glad my comment resulted in "basking". You deserve it. This really is a terrific shot. The head touching the frame is insignificant, and considering your intent is arguably integral to this photo. Kudos to both you and your model!

Beautiful model and great dreamy effect. I don't know but IMO there should have been more space where the model is looking intead of her back. Anyway looks great as it is.

Nice work. Kind regards.

I like the lack of room in front of her and the space behind her. Most advice is to do the opposite, but if you always follow the rules, then nothing will set your work apart from the majority. This does give an impression of cold and isolation. I like it.

M. Zafar, it is always nice to get positive feedback or constructive criticism. Your comment is very much appreciated. I know it shouldn't make a difference, but when the comment comes from someone with such unquestionable talent, I am humbled! Thank you!

Kim, You seem to have answered M. Zafar for me in my use of space. Generally, I upload photos if I like them. I do not think of rules as such. I like this and it is good to know someone else does too. It is also good when someone appreciates the unconventionality of the shot.

Thanks to you both!

Your best image yet, I would prefer if there was no border, but the effect is mysterious and works well.
