I would have to agree with you Ringo. It is a strange shot but very compelling. The focus on the girl's face could be better... or is it movement? Also the stray arm on the left is a bit of a distraction. The couple under the girl's armpit kind of ruin the mood.

I know I am sounding negative and I don't mean to. I am just trying to help you place what is 'missing.'

Not a darn thing missing, except maybe a provocative name to go with it. That's what sets the winners apart many times in competitions. This is a classic. Hope you made a print of it and hung it in your home. Blessings.

Please tell me you got this published! Just enough of the girl on the right (framing the entire photo) who sets the tone and gives a stark look -- if even partial -- of the reality of the cold. This is an amazing shot.

Funny - if I had taken this shot I would have been disappointed. The 1/3 of the girl's face is not enough to constitute a subject, and the flash imbalance is disturbing. Having maybe a 1-stop difference between her face and those of the other people, if she was not so tightly cut off, would be great, but this is about a 3 stop difference. But, different strokes for different folks. Clearly, some people love it, and maybe it'll sell or create oohs and ahhs at the gallery.

I wish I could see both faces of the couple and that the closeup of the women's face was a tad darker. But all-in-all I still think this photo is very compelling. I like it!

God, this is really a straight shot? Because I have to agree with the previous comment of "surreal" - it looks composited! And! The title sort of explains the look on the girl's face in the foreground - but at first I thought she was either panic'ed or angry (before I realized she had just jumped in to near freezing water). But the couple (one person partially hidden behind her) remind me of the old couple that crawled under the door in Lynch's Mulholland Drive - they were surreally (is that even a word?) happy in opposition to scene (which in your image is dominated by the angry/panic'ed girl in foreground).

Then you have what seems to be a normal crowd of beach revelers generally moving in the opposite direction of the paniced girl. So the "normal" beachgoers are (en masse) balancing the strong foreground figure with opposing motion. Normal vs. abnormal - with the surreal waving stationary couple anchoring the frame on a 1/3 line.

Sheesh. Here's the twist to me. I think if you uploaded this without the explanatory title it becomes some abstract image that a viewer would project themselves into (unfortunately, before I saw title, it triggered a reaction of memories of the recent tsunami disaster in Asia - and I wondered if that was what was going on - which in itself touches on the current context in which images are interpreted as a way to critique and understand images).

But damn again, even with the title to direct a viewer down a given path, the weird element is still that damn couple waving and maybe even weirder the crowd of people prancing in the surf as if it was a balmy day - and the only normal person is the foreground figure who is reacting naturally to the prospect of freezing to death!

I'm exhausted.
