The composition is superb, and both the richness and range of colors really make this jump off the screen. I imagine that the print, if you've treated yourself to an enlargement, is sublime.

I see that this was posted nearly two years ago, so perhaps you've forgotten some details about that day, but I'm curious about how you metered the shot. After my one trip to the Grand Canyon, I was disappointed to receive a bunch a poorly metered images that didn't meet the difficult lighting challenges posed by the place. It seemed to me that a graduated filter might've helped in many shots - but as I look at this, I'm not so sure that's what you did. Rather, it seems that you just took a lucky meter reading (or maybe a dozen shots...). Do you recall? I'd love to know...especially as I look forward to another trip to AZ this December.

Thanks for the excellent post - it's still turning heads :)

Hi Lance. I do remember that day and what I did to get this image.
First, it's a 4x5, and this composition is a crop. The original wasn't nearly as good - it included much more of the ridge on the right.

As for metering, I used my trusty incident meter and simply pointed the dome at the setting sun and set the camera to exactly what it said. That's about as complicated as I get. If I don't have direct access to the same light the subject is in I take a wild guess - not the best approach with slide film!

Thanks for your comments and have a great trip.

Robert
