I'm not sure what the purpose of this photo is. The arrangement of boats in the frame don't do much for me. I think the line of buoys are distracting, too.

First of all, remove the date from the picture - it is good for family album. Next try not to cempress the pic so much. I like the pic. I would move the camer to the right. It is a bit messy.

The earlier comment asking what the purpose is - seems to have good intentention but the poster should have eleborated so that you could better understand what he is talking about. The biggest and most basic concept a novice should learn is that before you raise the camera to compose an image, ask yourself 'what is the purpose' of the image? In your mind, identify the subject. Then pick up your camera and look through the viewfinder, but don't take the picture just yet. Look at where in the frame you want your subject? It should fill the frame but generally be off-center. Find the best angle with the least amount of distractions. "Cluttered" images generally (there is always exceptions) detract from the main subject so strive to isolate your subject. These are just some guidelines and many succesfull images don't always follow them, but its always a good idea to start with the basics - always use a tripod and learn to use your camera in manual mode. Understand how focal lenghth, film speed, aperture and shutter speed all can add or detract to an image. With time and practice you will discover your own unique style of photography. There is a lot of good information on PN and more importantly lots of helpfull people.

Hi John,

Sorry for the rude comment. I have an unintended habit of being blunt when hidden behind the anonymity of the internet. Anyway, I was just trying to challenge you. I think your purpose was to show a tranquil scene with the beautiful light of sunset (entirely valid). You need to work on how you do this. I much prefer your vision. Having only one boat in the photo gives a nice point of focus. The lack of buoys and other boats simplifies it- makes the photo seem more 'tranquil'. I really don't like the date on the photo. If you are serious about aesthetics don't have it. Does this help?

Nice colours, but fussy composition. The date in the bottom corner suggests that this was little more than a fortunate snap, and on that level it does have some merrit. The suggested crop makes the best of it.

The people of Jamaica will be suprised when they look at the exposure details and discover that their great nation is now part of the U.S.A.!
