hanna_cowpe 0 Posted December 18, 2004 I'm continually perplexed when the shots of mine I like the most receive the least feedback and vice versa. Whether you like the image or not, I'd be interested to hear why. Thanks for your time. Link to comment
ada-ipenburg 0 Posted December 18, 2004 I like this shot very much. Instead of a several hanging autumn leaves, it look to me as a bouquet of beautiful flowers. Very well done! 7/6 Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted December 18, 2004 I don't know much about photography, but I know what grabs me and makes me want to stare at it and just drink it in, and this photo does it for me. I really love it. Link to comment
Phil_Light 794 Posted December 18, 2004 There is a very Zen-like quality to this image and I find the images I respond to the most have a very simple, elemental design quality to them. I tend to like overboard deeply saturated graphics and/or very subtle separation's of colors apart from the intensity of the graphics. This is one of those subtle images, no overwhelming color, very pleasing composition balanced in the right-hand third, and an out-of-focus background which suggests more depth and color than actual textures of the objects. Bottom line is- this works, however subtlely. I also sent you an e-mail recently to your referred address. I also realized that some of my Vancouver Island images (ones that I really like) I had pulled for underwhelming response. But I still have my "Nessie In Dry Dock" image which is from French Beach near Jordan River. However my Rainforest image I have pulled, even though I thought it was really an interesting look at woodland rain forest growth! No accounting for taste however, and it seems all too often I need to pointedly defend the right to depart from the super color "postcard" or the perfect "grayscale" rendered Black & White image! afterthoughts 0 Posted December 18, 2004 This image is so good, it's a bit scary. It's amazing what can be done with a camera when it's in the hands of the right person. 7/7 Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted December 18, 2004 Hanna, I know what you mean about favourite images disappearing without a ripple into the great pond of PN. I have a theory about this : now this is a lovely shot - the light through the leaves, the colours the hazy background. But although being well up in its class it has to compete for attention with say a few thousand others. Now if you had a cute squirrel hanging upside down from the branch and waving at the camera it would stand out more. That would NOT make it a picture to hang on the wall and contemplate for ever - but it would stand out. That's my theory - put a cute squirrel or equivalent into your shots. (Or alternatively forget the squirrel and just take the shots you like!) Link to comment
amitai schwartz 0 Posted December 18, 2004 I like this one even better than the one that preceeded it and I really liked that one. Can't find anything wrong with it. Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted December 18, 2004 Thankyou all so much for your response. Phil, that explains why my search through your portfolio didn't bring up any obviously familiar shots, but I'll be back for a closer look. I did leave a comment on your portfolio page but if you check it as infrequently as I do mine you proabably haven't seen it yet. Also got your email and will reply soon. Colin, I suspect you're right, and I wasn't whining, simply curious about what other people see and appreciate. There is a sea of raves over TRP images but rarely do people express what really moves them. Equally there are the lowballers who, I suspect, are balancing what they feel are overrated images but never have the courtesy to explain why they think their judgement is more pertinant than that of others. I've seen many many 3's on others'good images recently but rarely a comment to back it up. It's like you say, two polar bears embracing in the snow need to be wearing ice skates to get more than a 3 for originality! Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted December 18, 2004 No, I didn't think you were whining - any more than I have anything against cute squirrel pictures! :-) Polar bears on ice skates? Good idea! Now what I really like about this is its naturalness and simplicity. Simplicity as opposed to artificiality (rather than complexity). It is the sort of shot I have tried many times to really do justice to myself. But translating the reality into a photo in this case I found difficult. So I appreciate what you achieved here. kslonaker 0 Posted December 19, 2004 This one works for me because so many times, I've seen similar shots, but I can never "bring them to life" like you have in this composition. Mine never seem to reflect what I actually saw. I like the simplicity of this and the way the leaves stand out against the background. There is no accounting for taste - I can never predict which ones will do well for me. The ones I think will be so-so, do well. The ones I think are great, don't work. Maybe it's because we see the originals??? I don't know...I'll never figure it out. Anyway, I do like this one a lot. Link to comment
jayme 0 Posted December 19, 2004 The composition, color, subject, detail and DOF are all wonderful. Very nice indeed! Link to comment
hanna_cowpe 0 Posted December 19, 2004 Thankyou all for responding to my request. Kim, I think you have the same experience as I do. I've had files languishing in their folders for months and I think...oh well, why not and they are very popular and others that I think are great turn out to be real duds. Personal emotional significance carries great weight. It's not always easy to convey it to a detached viewer. Link to comment
wilsontsoi 0 Posted December 20, 2004 Hanna, this one works in my book. Very nice sharp leaves and branches in the forground against the blurred background. Simple yet effective. As for predicting an image success when posting, I do agree that it's very unpredictable. Knowing the originals prior to posting, different tastes of PN viewers, how the image is different from other uploads at the same time, and time of day in your uploads (due to global time differences and pool of viewers,) probably have something to do with it. Hope I'm not being too vague here. ^_^ Link to comment
root 0 Posted December 20, 2004 Sometimes we surprise you, don't we. It's beautifully done, from the blurred-yet-recognizable background to the strong right side vertical that opens up into an arrangement of curved lines and colorful shapes. Link to comment
amalsircar 2 Posted December 21, 2004 Hanna, this is a beautiful image. It has a lyrical delicacy that appeals to the soul.I love the way you have composed the shot, colourful leaves, against backlight, curling up.Heartiest congratulations and best wishes for Christmas & New Year. Link to comment

sef1664877429 0 Posted December 27, 2004 Simple in concept, complex in design. The bare, twisting verticals on the right, curving out into the pefectly placed leaves on the left. Wonderfully, dreich atmosphere. The white thing in the background( car?) is a minor distraction, though. A slight change in position could have hidden it behind the leaf, hopefully without spoiling the design... The sort of thing we pass everytime we go out and completely miss. Well spotted! hanna_cowpe 0 Posted December 28, 2004 Marina, thanks, it's been a while. I expect you've been on one of your many trips to interesting places. Stephen, you may be right about the car. There is a road there in the distance. I was probably so engrossed in the shot that I didn't notice it. Link to comment
