Situated 29 Km. to teh west of Huesca. It is the most impressive andattractive castle in Aragon and probably Spain.

From the point ofview of the architecture and sculpture it is one of the most perfectexamples of Romanesque art in Spain and Europe. It occupies aspectacular position on a high crag of 2200 square metres and issurrounded by a long exterior wall. The whole complex has a totalsurface area of about 10000 square metres.

Within this walled sitethe primitive town of Loarre was housed, today located below on theplateau.

The castle was built around the year 1,020, at the onsetof 12th C. by king Sancho the Great. At the turn of the century (in1,071), his grandson, Sancho R᭩rez, enhanced the fortress and, aftera strenuous 30 day journey to Rome, obtained the direct blessing ofPope Alexander II for the monastery built in the castle (see QuamquamSedes athttp://www.castillodeloarre.org/Loarre/QuamquamSedes.htm)

Off thecastle the two very well preserved rectangular towers are remarkableand are called Homenaje and la Reina. La Reina tower with theprimitive chapel is from an earlier period reminiscent of the Arabstyle. The church and the rest of the military buildings belong to alater period ( XI and XII century). The Homenaje tower, with arectangular base, stands above the whole complex with it height of 22metres.

The Royal Chapel is the most important site here for its richness incapitals, windows, cupola, series of blind arches in its apse andvaults of canon and oven; it is a two storey building , one of thembeing the crypt, where you can see the unique entrance to the castle. There is a pavilion with three rooms which it is believed were used asbedrooms or for auxiliary services. The well is also still there. Inthe XI century it was the castle-convent of medium level Canons.

Me gusta muchisimo.

I, too, hope that they get those diacritical marks operating again. All one used to have to do was to use the ALT + numeric keypad values. Now one has to use the HTML code, which is a pain. (I wrote a forum on site feedback on this issue.) Bob Atkins doesn't think that it was deliberately done to make us write in English. I hope that he is right.

Lannie: Not so difficult HTML. But I agree it's a rela pain on the culo!

Another masterly composed castle photo from you, congrats. Classic composition, natural colors, good detail - nothing to improve. Regards, Carsten
