Last light over Bali Hai

www.hawaiianphotos.net/Kauaitours.htmwww.hawaiianphotos.net/kauaiphotos.htmThe sun was done and gone and the last rays of lighting were fading away. I used a tripod and cable release to catch the 30 second exposure. I could crop away some of the darkness, but seem to like how it fades away so kept it as is for now. As always your opinions are greatly appreciated, so feel free to let me know if you agree. Many mahalos. www.hawaiianphotos.net

Wow! This is a stunning photo! This is the type of photo that inspires me to get better at my photography. I only wish I could find scenery like this. Thank you for brightening my day.

Fabulous. The colors are so beautiful. Photographs like these are simply inspirational. Helps me learn.

Why would any one want you to crop away the darkness, when it adds balance, drama and harmony to the pix. See The Tao of Photography by Tom Ang if you disagree. Unusual, but diff. to see a red sky, but only a slightly touched-by-pink reflection. Bali or Hawaii??? Full marks for using film for nature.

Thanks for your comments. Sorry Thomas, this is Bali Hai on the Northshore of Kauai, not the isle of Bali. Never been there actually. My only thought is that the colors in the water are much softer than the sky due to the longer exposure. There was a fair amount of water movement here this evening. Very little time in Photoshop with this image. Yes film is still King in my book too. But digital is so simple it's scary! I took an image of one of our display stands, framed it, added its dimensions and sent out to a potential vendor. All in under an hour. can't do that with my film. Thanks again.

beautiful colours but the foreground is too dark Vincent . This I am writing because you have wanted the feedback which is more important than the act of rating ..

Vincent, Beautiful exposure on the sky, upper left. I agree, the dark areas nicely balance the light ones & each other for that matter, so I'm not in favour of further cropping. How did you determine the 30 sec. exposure on this one? Had I been faced with this scene I would have started by metering the sky area, upper left, and then bracketed around that. But of course (boo hoo) I wasn't there! Best, LM.

Very nice balance of the clouds in the upper left with the tree branch and great colors. I think I might also like to see another version with an added 30 seconds simply to open up the foreground detail a little more and give some added depth. A few more open gaps in the tree branch might also help. Very nice work.

Very nicely done...I like the diagonal foreground shoreline along with the extreme contrast. I will comment more on this one when I see on my caliberated monitor.

I simply chose it. The nice thing Len about using my F-5, is that I rarely have to worry about such techinical issues. When I go shooting a location like this, the last thing I want to be thinking about are the numbers. It allows me to focus my attention almost exclusively on composition. Composition is everything in my opinion. By using the shutter or aperture priority programs, the camera makes the proper adjustments for me automatically. Still, just for added safety, I always bracket wherever I am shooting.

Yes Steven a little more light through the trees would have been great to have. I could easily make more with the clone tool I guess if I wanted, but prefer to keep like it was as I saw it...for now. A crop of the bottom third does make technical sense as well, but I just cannot quite bring myself to changing the ambiance here that would follow. I actually prefer leaving the darker areas on both the bottom as well as left side for now. The problem with going longer than 30 seconds is that you lose detail in the clouds from my own experiences. In this case I feel it's essential since there is a significant amount of darker areas in this image. You also gain very little extra benefit in the water say at a full 45 minutes verses only 30 seconds. Plus it allows for me to click the shutter a few extra times before it's all finished.

Yes Tuhin I do appreciate your and all opinions supporting the image as it is, as well as suggestions for improving this. ALWAYS offer your honest thoughts. Many mahalos to all of you for doing just that!

Hi Vincent, a dramatic sky indeed. I was going to post I, too, would like the foreground less dark, but read your post and understand why you want to keep it as is. Fine job.

No - the crop is perfect, Vincent. In fact, if anything, there would probably be a bit more that you could have included to the left. I DO like the fading colors in that direction. :-) I also like the brights in the different tones ... reds in the top and blues in the bottom. The silhouetted tree adds the perfect final touch. Wonderful work, as always, Vincent!! Regards!

Mitzi and Rossano singing right now! I agree with Lou Ann; the crop is fine. I like the dark areas (sort of like a "tunnel") because they set the view in such a way as to provide a great feeling of depth. My only subjective complaint would be that Bali Hai seems very small. But still another great, romance-filled photograph Vince. Regards.
