alberto.conde 0 Posted November 30, 2004 At an altitude of 250 m. a hill dominates Gibraltar, the entrance gateof many invasions of Iberia. The Arabs realized its importance and, except from two brief periods, the fortress their built on it itstayed in their hands. Old Castellar's urban area is situatedwithin the walls of the Nazari castle and from it you can sight theAfrican coast and Gibraltar's rock. Extraordinarily preserved, itsexterior perimeter has not undergone any changes, thus presenting thecharacteristics of the castles of the kingdom of Granada. The fortresspresents an irregular walled plan, forming the walls perfectly settledon the rock, flanked by towers, and in which the town Arch and thefortress-palace stand out. It was a border enclave (hence its name,Castellar of the Frontier) since the XII century and only in the 15thC. the area became the scene of the wars between Castillians andMuslims. In 1434, Juan de Saavedra, keeper of the neighboring Jimena, seizes the fortress. To day, castle and village still belong to thedescendants of the noble family who obtained it as war prize, the Dukeof Medinaceli Link to comment
Saludos. Link to comment

rkynast 1 Posted November 30, 2004 Fine composition. Too bad about the high contrast white washed walls interfering with the exposure. I enjoy your narratives very much: thank you. Regards. Link to comment

Link to comment

Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted December 2, 2004 A very fine shot. The texture in the white washed walls is very good. Link to comment
