Down for the Count!

LenMarriott

On display inside Cabela's Sporting Goods store, Dundee, MI. One of dozens of animals displayed in natural looking surroundings. Worth a look even if you are not interested in hunting or fishing. Nirvana if you are interested! Scanned from 4x6 proof on entry level Canon flatbed. Cropped, sharpness, levels, in PS. Handheld @ f1.4 Fuji Superia 800 with +1/2 compensation. Incandescent store lighting. Not sure if leaving this one in colour is the best way to go. Any thoughts? Best, LM.

Gee Len,

For a while I thot a Leica-proponent such as yourself could ever end up in a big game shoot-out. :-) It simply didn't sound like you but I am always a person for change.

Even though it was from a display in a sporting store, I cannot really tell because of your close cropping. Besides the lighting (too good to be true), the "actions" and the Canis Lupis deadly "glance" was more than convincing.

A realistic looking display seen at Cabela's Sporting Goods store in

Dundee, MI. My only option was to hand hold @ f1.4 and brace against

some boxes. If I get the opportunity to do this again I'll bring my

reflector along to slightly open up the face between the Muskox's

eyes. Flash on camera would have ruined the shot in my opinion. I'm

all ears to hear your opinion on your approach to such a scene.

Best, LM.

Arthur, A Leica proponent? My bank account is not equal to my lust for one! :) . A close crop was essential here to even come close to making this as realistic as possible. (there were little signs near the animals on small posts identifying all the creatures on display just to make cropping a challange). The stuffed animals were arranged with very animated poses. I was most impressed.

Jim, thanks for your input! Best, LM.

When I first saw this, I said, where the heck has Len been to get this shot?! Then I took another look at the name to make sure I was in the right portfolio. What a convincing shot! That must have been a really neat place! I think you captured it really well, with a strong composition. It's too bad that the wolf is out of focus, though. I guess you were limited to a shallow DOF due to the low light and no tripod. Nevertheless, is is a dynamic, evocative capture that looks very realistic!

I would just like to echo Greg's comment. This looks as real as National Geographic. Also, Your "Len Marriot" Bio Photo is great!

Mike, Kudos to my shooting partner that day, Greg McCracken. Check him out. Best, LM. P.S. as of Aug. 05 bio photo has been changed. LM.

Great shot! If you hadn't told us those animals were displays, I would have never guessed they were not real! What an honest deception!

Daryl, Well, now you know the rest of the story! Just tagging along with my brother-in-law, a hunting and fishing enthusiast, as he was experiencing the fulfilment of a life long desire to shop at CABELA'S, a hunter's and fisherman's Mecca. Worked out well for both of us. Actually the displays and product there kept both photographer and fisherman occupied for the better part of a day. I'm sure there are more opportunities waiting for me if I should ever get back there as the displays are impressive! Looking forward to it. Best, LM.
