salvatore.mele 1 Posted November 20, 2004 In remote Spitzberg island, a thousand kilometers from the North Pole, a tiny Russian settlement, Barentsburg, is among the most strange places I ever saw. Hardship is common from working in the mines, the extreme arctic climate, and the ultimate isolation. Still, colorful mural pictures adorn a couple of buildings... Which story would this wall tell you? Link to comment
robertbrown 1 Posted November 21, 2004 Salvatore, this was quite a find. It's really an interesting mural--a terrific example of Soviet worker's art (with its romanticed vision of the life of the Russian worker). I like the colors and I think the straight on, centered composition works for this shot. I wish the bottom was straight: it creeps up on the right side. I also wish you would have shot this exactly straight on; it looks like you were standing a bit to the left when you took it. Overall, I like this a lot, especially given where you found it! Salvatore, I uploaded another version of this--more contrast and some extra sharpening. I'm not sure it makes a whole lot of difference. Link to comment
salvatore.mele 1 Posted November 22, 2004 Robert, thanks for your message. This is the least-feedback-ever picture I had on PN, so good you visited it. I agree with you on the perspective, but this is as much as I was able to pull out, since the murales was not straight by itself to start with, and I was also pointing the camera upward to add bad to worse. As for the saturation, I need not stress that there was not exacly lots of light, we were in a foggy cloud... but I appreciate the time you took for the modified version. I'll have another similar shot coming out soon, of the local museum. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted November 22, 2004 Excellent color rendition and contrast. It does depict the strong cultural content and has the ability to create some emotive sways. Link to comment
