Mountain and Cloud

robertbrown

Taken at dusk, ISO 1600, long exposure. I liked the cloud, though it's too hot. Also, a lot of digital noise--could it masquerade as grain?

Comments, ratings appreciated on tradtional landscape--thanks. I was

intrigued by the cloud, as well as the distant (70 miles) mountain

and layers of hills. This was shot at dusk at ISO 1600: the cloud is

too hot and there's a lot of digital noise.

I believe that's a lenticular cloud. They're amazing to see! I like the composition of this image. I wish there had been a way around the "noise".

I've a threefold comment.

First, the noise. I do not find it so dramatic. On the other hand the execution does convey some different feeling than just being on the mountain in front of this scenery. The overall effect is a bit on the dreamy side, and this is suited for the image. We get shapes which nicely follow each other, in different shades of gray. Was it in colour, I would have tagged it as watercolour, indeed (is there anything as a colour version to see even as small post here in the thread?)

Second, the composition, or what I like thereof. I like the way the altocumulus lenticularis is balanced and balancing the series of darker hills at the bottom, and I like the way the mountain at the horizon connects the two worlds. It is of the colour of the sky, points up to the sky, but it is at the same time the natural end of the series of hills, so it does belong to the earth, rather than the sky.

Third, what I dislike in the composition: the way the cloud is cropped from the left, for sure, and maybe also from the right. While the right choice has a reason, to me, in the succesful location of the mountain in the frame, I feel quite uneasy with the choice done on the left... explanations would be welcome.

Cheers, s.
