Lake Ontario moonset

cghubbell

Editing in GIMP: curves to bring out midtones - the details were hidden in a small band. Selective gaussian blur to remove low light noise, cloning to remove one streak where a gull's trail showed too much, convert to greyscale, then applied a duotone treatment and finished with sharpening.

Still inspired from the lunar eclipse, I ventured out capture the

moonset the next morning. I used a GIMP script-fu duotone filter to

create the look after converting to greyscale. I'd welcome any

comments on how this image strikes you...

I think it's actually good work, and very original. Most of us concentrate on the sun in situations like this. I like the bird overlapping the moon. I would have preferred the moon to be a little more off center, but the position of the horizon is good. Nice gradient effect in the sky. 5/6

I'm not sure what "my drawing for birds" means in this context, and it is a bit frustrating to hear that this is considered very poor work... Seems a bit harsh, although I greatly appreciate people taking the time to leave comments and respect your opinion.

Just in case there's any question, I intended the birds to be scattered about the frame as I thought their relationship to the shape of waves was interesting. I specifically waited (just about froze solid on this cold morning) for a bird to cross the moon with a recognizable profile. Wanted it centered, but the birds weren't listening to me so I took what they would offer.

Thank you again for your input!

calm and quiet - who likes the water must love this mood.

Although nature could have helped a bit more to the image if there were no darker cloud on the left side of the top, I prefer this unmanipulated view.

Ignore the poor ratings. Some people need garish colours to impress them. I like simple scenes like this where the finer details of nature speak for themselves. I like the pale hue in this rather than strict b&w. It's a pain when the birds won't listen to your requests. I don't really mind the moon where it is. But I find the bird 'touching' the horizon a little distracting. Just wish it was a bit lower.
