flies - various kinds Band Eyed Fly

I have been shooting bugs for 4 seasons and this season was the

first time I saw this critter. Can anyone help with the ID?

Amazing Mark, a terrific addition to your collection. The only nit I can come up with is slight softness in the leg on the left. I wonder if a little additional sharpening could work there?

First I thought it was a horse fly (Tabanidae), but I can't see the sting on its mouth. Another possibility more realistic would be a fruit fly (Tephritidae). Both families exhibit such an spectacular eye patterns as this. About the shot, considering DOF limitations, it works quite well (6/7). Best regards :)
