Aurora with Igloo, Brooks Range, Alaska, USA.

travelphotography

thanks for all the comments. It is a long exposure, I think it was way over 5 Minutes, Contax 645 - I had a Coleman lamp inside which I switched of I think after 1 or 2 Minutes. Shot on Provia 100 F.
Here you can find some more of my northern lights, aurora borealis pictures from Alaska and the Yukon.

Beautiful shot. I am also curious about the tech details. I can just guess - the igloo has been painted evenly from the inside as there are darker areas on the snow bricks and the crevices between them are lighter. Let us know. Regards, Peter

Beautiful composition. It seems to me quite rare to have both an aurora and an igloo on the same shot. For that I give you 7 in originality.

Nice shot! Superb work! Like everyone else, I am interested in the technical aspects. How much of a difference was there in the intensity of the light from the igloo and the northern lights?

7/7 Great picture.

As far as the igloo lighting, is it possible that it was done with a off camera flash remotely fired?

Wonderful shot, nice and interesting. If I may add my idea, the igloo was lit from a light inside it (hence the crevices being lighter - less snow to penetrate)... Jiri

The overall effect is very nice, the igloo in the foreground definitely makes the picture this time. The relative softness of the aurora and those star-trails suggest that exposure time was close to (or longer than) one minute, perhaps cause the lens was stopped down to increase DoF? I know how difficult it is to obtain perfect photos of northern lights, so I can only congratulate regardless of any minor issue.

This is as beautiful as a rainbow dream, hope to see and experience many more uploads from you.

Solar minimum is here and those of us at lower latitudes will have to wait for a couple of years, before a more active Sun throws out some more material to ionize our upper atmosphere.

The auroral display and mountains form a nice backdrop here, but as already stated, the subject in the foreground really make this a unique image.

Lovely shot!!! Shots like theese are not easy to nail. Based on my limited knowledge i would guess the exposure time was nearer to 10 minutes. I just wonder what it would appear with a much longer exposure,.. to get the startrails more appearant... i would belive that more DOF and less illuminating time in the igloo could have made that possible without get it too bright. Very Well Done!!

Since you asked: I would have probably shot from a few meters to the right and a little lower. That way the igloo would be on the left, nicely framed by the darker mountain, and the intersection of igloo and snowline on horizon would be a little less noisy. And the best part, the aurora would seem almost to be eminating from the igloo.

That said, its easy to recompose someone elses photo from a place of warmth and comfort. Its not like I was standing in the icy wind with my gloves off. Well done Rolf!

Awesome shot, congratulations Rolf.

What is the light source inside the iglo? If anything, I would have reduced it a little, maybe, or would like to have seen the difference between reduced igloo light, and what we've got here. Maybe less igloo light is worse? this looks almost like a James Bond ice palace, whereas the idea of the igloo is warm and cozey. But, I wasn't there, so I don't know. I like how the lines of composition are repetitive, the hills and the aurora like a mirror to the hills and the igloo.

the igloo doesn't look real - at first I thought it was painted with light from a small torch during the long exposure? Very etherial and almost surreal. If its an unmanipulated capture then my sincere congratulations!

Phenomenal shot! Thank-you for the shooting details - judging when to turn off the coleman lamp would have been an added trick! My only change, if it could have been done, would be to give more space around the igloo in the bottom right corner. Brilliant! 7/7.
