At midnight, on the summit of a peak in remote Spitzberg island, along way away from home and from civilisation. In this case, theclosest thing resembling home is the tiny sailboat of our expedition, the Imram. A dot in thegulf at the end of the river.

Critiques and comments on the composition and colours are mostwelcome. Does it convey a feeling of being far from everything in apossibly unforgiving nature?

its a very lovely shot, wonderful composition. the colors are a little muddy on this monitor of mine, which is a little dark. midnight? seems like twilight. it conveys a peaceful, natural sense to me, but its hard to tell you are far away from civilization.

Hi Ben, that was shot a thousand or so kilometers from the North Pole in August. At midnight, the sun is around the horizon, toward north, which is to the left of this picture. It's indeed a special kind of light, since you get solid four hours (and more the furhter North you move) of golden light, sunset, twilight, sunrise one after the other!

I attach a diagram with the hours of light as a function of the month of the year.

mmm, tough one. Mixed feelings, overall, I'm not convinced, but there are parts that interest me. Looking out to the water, a feeling of being left behind( although get rid of the rucksack and the jacket, maybe a feeling of being shipwrecked and waiting for rescue?). The underexposed foreground is more of a problem. The light is subtle, but maybe a little too subtle... the underexposed person could work to put less emphasis on the figure, loosing him( or her, judging from previous shots) in the foreground is akin to being lost in the wilderness. Was this your intention? The idea is good, but not sure if you've pulled it off. Why? I have absolutely no idea. Maybe a different position or pose? Maybe a shot closer to the head? Its a tough one, isn't it? For a lost in the wilderness interpretation, maybe cropping the sky down to the clouds would create a more claustrophobic atmosphere, which may sound counter-intuitive, but being lost out here could be a suffocating experience... but your after the feeling of freedom, so...

Anyway, parts I like, but overall, not convinced.
