1000wordsphotography 0 Posted October 5, 2004 I have tried for ages to get a good shot of a heron. This one posed for me near a lake at Duke Gardens. Not an original photo, but a nice coup for me as I have stuggled to get near one of these awesome birds in a non captive situation. The larger version shows fairly good detail, though still not as much as I would have liked. (no sharpening done on this btw) Link to comment
1000wordsphotography 0 Posted October 5, 2004 Not awfully original, but hope you like it. Link to comment
anne_morgan 0 Posted October 5, 2004 Regina - IMHO this is no LESS original than 99% of the work on this site. This is beautifully well done!!! Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted October 5, 2004 There are very few original photos in the world, Regina. This is really good - great colors and detail. Your DOF is right on. Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 64 Posted October 5, 2004 Beautifully done, Regina. How far away were you? Link to comment
big daddy 0 Posted October 5, 2004 Nice shot. Very clean. Every year, I shoot a video piece at a Blue Heron nesting site here in Ohio. Last count was 110-120 nesting pairs in a very small area. Neat birds and you captured this one well. Link to comment
bryan olesen 0 Posted October 5, 2004 Good for you (and us) for all your waiting/patience. I know how you feel. Very nice colors and DOF, and a nice non-distracting background as well. Excellent work. Link to comment
cappoldt 0 Posted October 5, 2004 Regina, congrats! I'd offer a toast to your first GBH catch - just had my own first a few weeks ago (posted those in my Wildlife portfolio - yours is infinitely better). I've always found them to be both rare and skittish, dampening all efforts. I've just left the Midwest and live on the coast again, though, so odds are looking up. I lived in Durham for some time - what pond at Duke? Also, what equipment were you using for this shot? It's very sharp. Again, congrats. Link to comment
Coastie 0 Posted October 5, 2004 Wonderful capture Regina, excellent framing. Where are you located in NC? We get the occasional GBH on our pond here in Asheville. Nice job.7/6 Link to comment
1000wordsphotography 0 Posted October 5, 2004 Jerry, I live just east of Raleigh, I will be heading out toward Asheville for a few days next month... what are the best shooting spots out there? Biltmore is our destination, but we will have time to check out other areas. Too late for foliage shots, but I want to try to get a good waterfall piv. Christopher, your wildlife shots are excellent. I enjoyed your folders. Thanks for all the encouragement! This pond is right on the Duke campus at Duke Gardens. Lots of geese, ducks etc, but my first time seeing a GBH. It allowed me to get about 20 yards from it. Link to comment
bekster 0 Posted October 6, 2004 Wow Regina! This is a gorgeous bird and an excellent photograph. Congratulations! Link to comment

cappoldt 0 Posted October 6, 2004 20 yards! Good grief. I spot one of these bad boys from 200(!) yards and they usually bolt. Way to go. I know the pond! And thanks for the browse of folders, back at you:) What lens were you using? Link to comment
1000wordsphotography 0 Posted October 6, 2004 I used my Canon digital Rebel and have 80-300mm lens. My estimating abilities are poor,,, it could have been further, but I was amazed at how close he allowed me to get. Of course he was perched out in the middle of the pond on a tall brick/rock mound, I was on the bank which put us pretty much at eye level from each other. I am sure he felt safe as he was surrounded by water. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted October 7, 2004 Very Nice and Sharp image. The depth of field is perfect Link to comment

michel_bordeleau 0 Posted October 7, 2004 One of the most beautiful heron picture I've seen. Would like to know more. What equipement, camera, optic, aperture. How far was the heron from the camera? Is there photoshop work... Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted October 7, 2004 Wonderful capture, Regina!! I love this! (And the DOF is perfect, too!) Link to comment
donnaalbers 0 Posted October 8, 2004 The colors in this bird are spectacular. I like the fact that you didn't oversharpen the feathers. . . the softness really adds to the image. Link to comment
