I am curious whether the color shifts in this one are interesting to

anyone else.

Basically, I am a novice in photography, but definately hold a good knowledge in paintings....The photo posted by you definately good transitional effects of colors, but theres too much of color (i mean its too bright and not soothing to the eyes). Using photoshop try making the photo less colored....

Thanks for your comment. The result of manipulating this particular photo reminds me more of the colors achieved using a batique technique on cotton or silk fabric. I think I would try a very different approach if the result I was looking for was a more painterly effect.
