New submit; new PS work

wakeforce

I had came back from a day of photographing a false bomb alert. (The alert wasn't false, but the bomb was) I was totally tired by the lugging around of my stuff and by the thick heat we we're having (at least I wasn't in a firemen's suit!), but when I saw that I simply couldn't do anything else than sit down and shot it. I took 3 pictures with varying f-stops to achieve hyperfocal distance (no distance markings on that lens ><) and achieved it at f/16 and f/22, but the ligth changed on the shot at f/22 so I used that one. It made that my shutter speed was slow (1 second) and blurred the leaves, which kinda pissed me off at first but that I like a lot now (seems more "eerie") What do you think of all of that? Any tought appreciated!*NEW SUBMISSION WITH NEW PS WORK*

Hi Jean-Philippe!

I quite enjoy this one! :-))

Like what you have done. I have to agree with you... the slow shutter speed does indeed affect the end result. Maybe it'll grow on you after looking at it some times...

I checked your large file of this upload...and the comression at the site does not at all give you justice. The picture is by FAR more interesting to look at when using PS in large resolution. :-))

To be picky...but constructive. It has great DOF...but not brilliant. Remember that if you want to have max DOF you need to put the focus point 2/3'rds into the picture. If I was you I would take the challenge...visit the place again...when there's NO wind... get the focus/DOF SPECTACULAR... and do the same PS work as you have. (Possible extensive...yet subtile!) :-))

Another thing which helps you immensly would be to (if you not allready doing so...) shoot in RAW format. You cannot believe the difference unless you have tried it!!! ;-))

See you mate!

Ivar :-))

PS! Could be fun to see what this shot would have been with in colors... saturates fall colors...

PPS! Attached is your file with some pointers as to where I feel it would have been FAB to have max DOF...AND no loss due to the slow shutter speed.

First off, it is wonderful to see that people on p.net are still writing meaningful comments, I'm presently movingto deviantart, I won't upload here anymore. I liked the forum community, but the critiquing one, except a few exceptions, is very poor.

About the DOF part, I also did that same shot with my old and trusty mechanical 35mm camera, which has DOF markings, went to hyperfocal and had everything dead on. I had to guess the hyperfocal on this one, since the 18-55 doesn't have DOF markings... I bracketed the aperture, and this one seemed the best, but maybe I didn't look well enough.

I'll try to go back there when the light is similar (It's around 30 secs from my home) and follow your pointers. Maybe up the iso to 200 to stick those leaves in place! I'd like to show you the 35mm version, but I've got no scanner...

The colors weren't really vivid on that day either, the leaves hadnt fell a lot when I took out. Now the earth is filled with leaves. I think I'm going to go and try a nigh shot of this right now, maybe it'll be interesting!
