In remote northern Spitzberg island, a mere 1000km from the North

Pole, at the height of summer, snow is not uncommon. A think layer of

cloud closed the view of the midnight sun and painted the peaks of

white. The texture of the cloud cover fascinated me and I tried to

record it on film... does it work?

The river of clouds is captured well, the composition is also good. The only thing that bothers me is the noise (or graininess in this case)... But it is not bothering me much... :-) Jiri

I love the mood you've captured here! Very powerful and brooding. I'm not the least bit jealous you made it so Svalbard before me...

Salvatore, I like this shot quite a bit. I'm assuming this was a long exposure and you may not have figured in reciprocity failure of the film, which probably resulted in the graininess. Still, I like the interesting clouds, mountain, and muted colors. I've always wanted to visit more of Norway (I'm 25% Norwegian), but have only been around Oslo.

I am nuts about sky, and this is an extraordinary, excellent sky and lighting situation. You were right to emphasize composition on the sky here, maybe a tad more of the mountain would be perfect, not sure. Regards, Carsten

Thanks to all of you for your support and positive feedback: when I shot it I doubted it would have worked out, and while scanning the negative I hardly though I would have posted it for critique...

Some answers.

Robert: there is no reciprocity failure, actually it was a 1/125-1/250 exposure (If I remember correctly) taken around the longer length of the 70-200. The colours are those which were there for real, in the middle of the arctic night.

Carsten: you might be right in getting more mountain, but this would have meant getting the sea at the horizon, what I felt did not belong to this shot.

The sky is really fantastic. The composition works well. I would have love a bit more of mountain (the foot) but it was probably imperative for that to move nearest if you would like to keep the same proportions with the sky.
