salvatore.mele 1 Posted September 9, 2004 Picture taken while hiking a mere thousand kilometers away from theNorth Pole, in Ny Alesund, Spitzbergen island... in one of the raresunny days of the whole summer. On the back, glaciers of several tensof kilometers diving in the sea.Your comments on the composition, expecially in realation with a squarecrop are highly appreciated: I am trying to improve my mountainpicture skills, thanks! dhatch 0 Posted September 9, 2004 I like the crop the way it is. It gives a sense of scale, especially the glacier in the back, the mountains on the right give a good perspective on the distance to the glacier. With a square crop that would be lost. Link to comment
malcolmelee 0 Posted September 10, 2004 this is a great shot, I love the colors and I love the crop. well done. one thing I might have thought about, however, would be shooting from below the other hiker. As dramatic as it is currently, it might look better if the mountains in the background looked smaller than the one that he is on. Just my opinion, love it the way it is. Link to comment
kyang 0 Posted September 11, 2004 Salvatore, I have to like this one since the subject is so good. But this one is no way close to the other one on composition aspect. Why? 2 reasons: 1, the foreground is a little too less, at least the other one give me solid presentation of foreground. 2, the relationship between the foreground and the background is disconnect here. The other one, you can see the foreground smoothly lead to the background from the bottom. I would say, without the people and the foreground, the pano crop here would be better choice. WIth the people, the other one is clearly better choice. Still the series is great. I would hang one of them on my wall. Link to comment
salvatore.mele 1 Posted September 13, 2004 Thanks for your comments, they are interesting and valuable to me. Some answers... @MalcolmIt is normal that the stone on which she sits is much lower than the other mountains, since that's what it was in reality. I admit the title is misleading. To achieve a towering effect I should have gone in a awkward place first, and lost most of the sea background... so no point. This is an interesting comment, though, since my idea with this crop was more to show her "in the void" rather than on top of all mountains.@KurtI find very interesting the suggestion of cropping like this without human figures and with more of the "how did one get there" with the human figure. Thanks for the insight! I think I'll try it out in future trips/crops of old images. Link to comment
david_cassidy2 0 Posted May 17, 2006 Very strong image. Captures the essence of man over nature wonderfully. I can feel their excitement of reaching their goal. Link to comment
