I'm partial to cats, Linda, especially tabbies, so I'll love this picture even if uncleaned and uncropped. And I must say the asymmetry in pupil opening is unusual.

greetings from the coloured one." MICHAEL, I noticed that too, but I am not shure if it isnt a shadow... But we will hear it by Linda? RE

Really interesting with the texture in the cat's fur and tonality. You should try another version of this with the same direction light, but with the background tone with the dark on the left (behind the lighter part of the cat) and the lighter part on the right (behind the darker part of the cat)...

Yes, really strange effect, looking th background an the eyes it seems like a yin yang (swapping the background colors).

Nice shot, my best wishes to PACO!

RE...I do believe that is a shadow.

Andrew...the cat is consistantly colored, so reversing the background light would also reverse the coloring.

Roger....your friend is waiting for you to feed him....

Andrea...I too noticed that (after I took it, I confess)

Not one for pet portraits usually, but how can I resist such a

handsome cat? (plus, I liked the lighting) Comments appreciated.

Looks like a great friend! I agree with Andrew Grant's comment, try to reshoot this with the background colors swapped, and perhaps try to either get more light on the main subject or less in the background (the background on the left looks burned out). Otherwise, beautiful capture.

Actually I meant this kind of deal (pls excuse the messy rush-job)!

But now I look at it, yours looks better the way it is - I like the way the dark side of the cat (sounds like a feline version of a Pink Floyd album) blends into the darker background at right. Very pretty cat, by the way :-)

Thank you all for your takes on this... Like Andrew mentions, I like the way the darker side of his face blends into the dark background...

Richard, the light background behind was a window. I like the contrast, but to each his own! Thank you for your comments.

This cat looks like he/she could do a number on you if you made the wrong move. Not sure I would handle the composition this way however. More Yin/Yangish.

PS: I just posted a PuddyTat shot. Take a look see.

Hi Paco, I like the contrast, the light and dark of the photo, it makes a stronger cat statement. (I like Cats)The strong vertical line is good too.

The eyes are driving me crazy! My eyes go back and forth between the light and dark and can't decide where to stay. I like what Howard did - that's effective and a little more settling to me. Still an interesting shot with the original and great for discussion.

You're right - I'm not one for pet pics, either, but this one is intriguing. I love the B&W and high contrast. The eyes are IT, though. Wonderful!!

Linda:

I gotta agree...I looked at each rendition with varying the background and the side that was lit, and the original post is the best! Again, my compliments to you on your great work...and your great subject (even though I have two absolutely wonderful "rescue" cats...with cats...looks can be deceiving! ;-) Your choice of B+W for this subject, the tack sharp focus, and the contrast really make this photo one to come back to (I did!).

I also prefere the first version (the one you displayed). I think the lightning effect is best in this one. And besides thes contrast that is being created I like very much the eyes of the cat: one lightend with the eyeball closed and the other in shadow with the eyeball apparently white opened. I suppose this is an effect of the post-processing and I don't know if you intended it like this but it suits very well with the hole atmosphere of the picture. It brings a surrealistic, not of this world touch.
