Gudhjem Quay

cris benton

This photograph and most of the others I have posted on Photo.net are taken from kite-lofted cameras. A kite, unseen in the image, supports a small, radio-controlled cradle that holds the camera. I can position the camera by walking around and/or letting out or retrieving kite line. I aim the camera and fire its shutter using the radio while I stay at the ground end of the kite line. The camera can rotate through the compass, tilt from horizon to nadir, and change from portrait to landscape format.I compose my images by watching the camera and imagining what it would see. The whole process entertains me to no end.

This is a shot from two weeks ago in Gudhjem's tiny harbor on the

north shore of Bornholm. The frame is split in half by 'ground

texture' and the boat is split in half as well.

In general I have enjoyed the comments and suggestions I have

received from Photo.net readers. When I first visited Photo.net it

was great. I would post images and folks would find them. I then

went through a period when it seemed like AZ was the only critic

interested in the work. Lately it seems even less likely that

someone will view or comment. Can someone in the know fill me in

developments at this site or provide suggestions on how best post my

work?

1. Regarding the photo: Technically, what makes this composition work (my opinion) is that whilst you may indeed have split the background in half vertically, and the boat itself horizontally - you've nailed the rule of thirds with the mast and its shadow. Which is primarily why this photo rocks.

2. Psychology 101:

EVERYONE HAS AN EGO. It is an essential human characteristic. It's one of the things that make us different than animals. And every artist of any sort I've met - even the young obstinate type - LOVES to know what other's think of his or her work.

One of the things that makes something like PHOTO.NET fun for ME is seeing what responses I got on my pictures. it's fun with morning coffee, it's a gas after a long day of shooting, it's something to look forward to after a busy week of traveling. It is an EGO BOOST when others enjoy one of my pictures!

This may SOUND egotistical. It may even BE egotistical. Nevertheless - it is precisely what makes using PHOTO.NET fun for me.

OF COURSE it pi$$es me off when someone (particularly those with not even a single photo up loaded) rate one of my pictures low. And when I go look at the work of said "low rater" and find an empty portfolio, or a portfolio full of what I consider to be below average work, It makes me FEEL BETTER when I find the low rating scofflaw is not a paying member.

Then I love to up load a new photo and see what happens.

It's just a heck of a lot of fun.

And yeah, yeah - all the righteous photogs here are here to "learn."

Well, I've been paid for shooting for over 35 years - and I am still "LEARNING" - but I'm not about to take anyone seriously whose criticism is politically motivated, or whose portfolio is empty, or who has just rated a photo 1/2 and yet has not a single critique relevant to the work at hand.

And I'm not egotistical ENOUGH to bother getting all neurotic about who rated what with what rating to start clipping and monitoring and back&forthing through all the raters in an attempt to "figure out" who gave me a low / high score.

That's just not fun.

By the way - I just shared all that so you wouldn't feel alone! I'm not bucking for changes at p.net. That's something that will have to work itself out over time.

ps... i rate this a 6/7. or is it 7/6? 7 for aesthetics and 6 for origninality. I'd give it an 8 for technical perfection were that an option.
