Fly Face

mplonsky

Live critter on a white building. This is full frame. It is about as much magnification as I can get out of my current equipment. Working distance was about 1.5 inches (as it typically is when reversing a 50mm on a longer lens). I estimate it is 4x lifesize. DOF is paper thin at this magnification, so I composited 4 successive frames to increase it. Not an easy image to get, but I had been trying to fill the frame with a fly's face for a few years now. I encourage viewing at the larger size.

Nice job... quality lens, accurate flash, closer aperture but... mainly: a great photographer. Best regards.

This is a great shot. I am wondering why there is no vignetting at full frame. I always end up with massive vignetting with a 100mm and reversed 50mm combination. Is it because of the TC which effectively gives you a 200 mm lens?

thanks,

I love it, Mark. A perfect Beauty imo. Nothing I'd change. One of your very best close-ups - its simplicity, emphasis on the eyes and simple colors do a great job. Cheers.

Hello Mark,

I expect the next picture to be the brains, this is so close. I'm impressed again.

As usual Mark, your insect images rock ! I've always been a fan of macro work. Where was the flash held for this image?

Excellent. and dear Mark Plonsky, I have to thank you especially for all your Internet lectures that I have read about the reverse lens.

Thank you a lot!

AMAZING!! My first impression was a smile when I saw this. I like the way the fly is somewhat posing for you with a slight tilt of the head. Perfect! Perfect! Perfect!

Great shot, great colors and incredible detail. I want to know how to do this! I read your technical details...but not sure on exact set-up. Was this taken just with the 100mm f2.8 macro + 2x teleconverter? I haven't managed to get this close yet, and I've been using a Canon 10D + 100mm f2.8 macro + 12mm and 25mm extension tubes, sometimes with a 1.4x teleconverter with a 420EX flash. Did you use any additional diopters? Is your lighting nearly exclusively flash (off camera?)

Also, was the subject alive or dead/mounted/immobilized?

Anyway, great shot and I'll appreciate any help you can offer!

Hello Mark, Do you remember me from a few months back? Well, I too am now on PN. I absolutely loathe flies, but you are probably the one person that can make me like looking at one. LOL Well, you don't need me to tell you that this is an awesome image. Your images are always so razor sharp! You talking about reversing the 50mm lens in the techno . . . I fully understand the DOF problem, I have used that technique myself with much success. You would recognize the frame if you saw it. I actually have two variations on PN. Although I thought the "straight shot" was near perfect, it did not rate too high, so I PS'ed and had some fun with it and currently it is holding its own among the Top Photos. For awhile it was even on the first page! I was pretty excited. he he ;-) If you are interested, and have the time, I would like to invite you to view some of the images in my PN portfolio, especially the one with the "Red Eye" problem. LOL I have a pretty wide variety of subjects, however. ;-) I hope to hear from you soon. You'll need to copy/paste: http://www.photo.net/photodb/member-photos?user_id=1051353&include=all
