Mud as a reflective surface. :-) Well done. Can you share some details? Digital or film? Exposure range of each layer?

Thanks Carl. Tech details (I guess I should fill them out, just didn't think anyone cared...):

Canon 1Ds (digital), 16-35 @ 29mm (according to EXIF).

Two exposures at f/16 one for 1s and one for 1/6s both converted with CaptureOne. I also used a version of the dark exposure that was further underexposed by -1.3 stops when developed in C1 to recover more color in some of the highlights. All three layers combined in PS CS using layer masks. Other than that, just a bit of tweaking with curves (set with a luminosity blending mode to avoid oversaturating things).

I use the exposure bracketing feature of the 1Ds which I have set up for 2 exposures - this minimizes the chance of camera movement between frames and lets me do the two shots very quickly so there is no risk of the sky and it's reflection getting 'out of sync'.

...and lots of mud - boots, tripod covered in it (not sure this is an absolute requirement for the technique though :))

I guess you can do this with multiple scans of slides, but alignment could get tricky. I think you mentioned earlier going to the 1Ds and given all the ballyhoo about film, especially for landscapes, it's nice to know this works well for shots with subtle gradients.

A friend of mine shoots architectural interiors with a 1Ds and the prints are on par with MF, so I know that a good sized print of this would be a delight.

To answer to your original question, yes, it can be the amazement of the texture in such an original reflecting surface. I am impressed by the craftmanship used in obtaining the image.
