Loved it very much but just coulden't figer it out how come the out of focus of the closer one contribute to the photograph. could i please get artist point of view?

Chen, the out of focus effect, I thought, might work for cala lilies, which don't have edges to show off sharpness anyway. So I use the soft focus to contrast the clarity of the glass vases. Maybe I over did it? Thanks.

Ray, it is much better without the candle. it has grace.play with that image a little more, try to give the 2 callas in the forground a little more sharpness.anyway it is a beautiful work, I like the "blueish" hue in the image. Pnina

I also find the blue hue enchanting, and agree that a little sharpness on the forground lillies wouldnt hurt.

Sorry I've come late to these discussions, Ray. I've been on the road. :-) This is definitely my favorite of the three calla lily images. I love the blue tones. I also like this better without the candles. I would like to see it with more DOF, though. I don't agree that calla lilies don't have many lines ... I like them because of the curves and angles. Keep playing with this theme ... I would love to see what more you come up with!!

Yes, I will retake the calla lilies with better DOF. Better yet, I am getting a macro lens for the job too. So stay tuned.

Thanks for rating and commenting my photos. Comments like yours help me to improve. :)

And welcome back Lou Ann. Now we can't wait to see yours from the trip.

Actually, I'm not really "back" ... just finding a minute or two on someone else's computer to keep up with some of my "interesting people". :-) Or should I say "cronies"? :-D

Also ... I'm not really taking pictures here ... just visiting relatives in upstate NY for a couple of weeks and attending a professional seminar. I'll be spending a week in Carson City (next week), but wonder if there'll be too much SMOKE out there to use the many rolls of Velvia that I purchased for the outing.

I'll touch base when I can!!

I see, even with your super fine Velvia, the Ash Canyon backfires will send up smoke plume to give your photos an ISO 1600 look? Ouch. Guess you may have to shoot in low light. Notice a lot of dusty cities only advertise with night shots? Tripod, cable release, and wide open aperture.... only kidding. Have fun.

Ray, this is potentially a terrific shot. Good background, light, and composition. However, the vases shouldn't be in the photo, and the lilies need to be sharp.

Robert, thanks. Soon as I learned from great comments like yours, callas have all withered away. But your suggestion is valid for many kinds of flowers.

I love what you did with your callas -- half way blended into the background. Hey, maybe I try something new with mine too. :D
