robert holmes 0 Posted July 11, 2004 Ed, was this a studio shot, and what equipment did you use?..I know how difficult is to get accurate contrast and tone with black skin, (see my African photos from 40 yrs ago)....I think it is a great image for sophisticated Westerners to look at, but the Africans I knew would have felt short-changed by it....This is NOT intended as a harsh criticism, but a simple enquiry... eddevlam 0 Posted July 11, 2004 Robert, I have no studio. I have a Minolta Dimage A1 with the best flash you can get for it (the 5600HS). I often use umbrellas for bouncing the light. With this one he was lying down and I bounced the light of my flash to the ceiling. I cropped it and the rest is PS work, layers, balance, sharpening, brushes and curves. To me this is the same as a high key photo with a very white skin. His parents (friends a mine) love it. They have a print and are very proud of it. I have to admit that they are "sophisticated Westerners" too. I sure do not want to offend half of the world population. Frankly I don't think this picture does offend someone. Regards, Ed. robert holmes 0 Posted July 11, 2004 Thanks for the info, Ed....Nobody will be "offended" by this picture; it is great...I suppose I was just reminiscing about my earlier life in Africa, when the Africans I had the honour to work with always wanted "full length" exposure, head to toe...I will try to put more of my old B/W into my portfolio... Thanks again for a lovly photo... Link to comment
michaelging 1 Posted July 16, 2004 I really like the look on the child face you captured. The fact that the face is offset to the left bothered me a little the first time I looked at it,but The more I look at it ,I think It really makes the photo.Great Job !!!!!!!!!! Link to comment
d2f 0 Posted August 10, 2004 With others I have commented about not cropping enough, here is an example of cropping to tight. Back off a little and give the left eye some space from the edge. Also next time try to get the subject's eye to peer into the camera, to make the connection to the viewer, this image is slightly off in that regard and loses impact. Link to comment
