Spring lasts late and with it inclement weather brought chilly

showers well into May in Hamburg causing residents to carry

umbrellas. This photo is taken after sundown under heavy cloud

cover. Your ratings and critiques are most welcome. (Please honor

me by submitting a helpful and constructive critique if you give a

harsh or negative critique/please share your superior knowledge to

help advance my photography). Thanks and Enjoy! ;~)) John.

I like this kind of image. It's quite funny in a way I can't tell... The colours of the umbrella make a good fit with the background.

What could have make this picture even better, is something or somebody in the background communicating with the umbrellaman(/woman). Very good anyway...

Maarten, however much some other raters disagree with your assesssment, I was struck on the street by the colors of the umbrella and how they fit with the saturated color of the wet paving stones/paving blocks, and the same again when I opened the processed prints. High ratings are always nice validation, but I also shoot to please myself. Some images just are idiosyncratic -- either you "see" them or you don't. Thanks for comment. John.

beatiful.. the patterns on the umbrella and the tight comp and ofcourse the colors make it for me.. is the title a play on the umbrellas of cherbourg? :D

Yes, of course, the title is a play on that classic movie "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg". Regrettably there's no Catherine DeNeuve below this umbrella, just an older woman, who never will represent Germany on its postage stamps or coins (as Catherine DeNeuve did France for a long while). John

Does anyone care to comment on the compositional elements of this photograph -- the lines of the umbrella, vs. the lines of the street, etc? It seems like Maarten and Balaji have seen the "colors" and the "crop" of this photo, but how about the whole composition -- the framing and the lines -- the geometry within the frame?
