colin carron 58,916 Posted July 6, 2004 Another shot of one of my favourite buildings - Ely Cathedral. All comments welcome! Link to comment
the grey house 0 Posted July 6, 2004 Colin, a striking image from an unusual viewpoint. It works very well - did you replace the sky? If you did I feel it has been done well and is a good choice as it gives the towers of the cathedral an almost 3d appearance. Nice work. atkphotoworks 0 Posted July 6, 2004 Interesting composition and I agree with Paul re: the sky, it really adds drama to the image. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted July 6, 2004 Thanks Manu! Paul, Amar, yes this is a replacement sky as at the time it was a very boring overcast. So this is from another frame with more going on. Link to comment
micheleberti 0 Posted July 6, 2004 Great point of view and DOF. The geomethry of the roof in the foreground really add to the photo. WEll done! Link to comment
sarahunderhill 1 Posted July 7, 2004 New perspective. Dramatic sky, and the roof seems to be reflecting it. Great colors in the background. Nicely done. Link to comment
carsten_ranke 0 Posted July 7, 2004 Interesting the perspective, the roof leading the eyes. Good work on the sky. Perhaps slightly too much roof, I would avoid the central composition here and crop a little at the bottom (just an idea). Regards, Carsten Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted July 7, 2004 Thanks to you all for taking the time to comment. Carsten, yes I wondered about both your suggestions. However My own preference is to keep the tower fairly central to allow more of the background landscape to be seen. I agree a little could be cropped from the bottom without losing much. kslonaker 0 Posted July 8, 2004 I like the long line of roof - it makes this a more unusual composition. It also leads your eye right to the central subject in the background. Replacing the sky was a good choice; the dramatic sky works well with this. Link to comment
chrisspracklen 0 Posted July 8, 2004 A striking image largely due to the wonderful viewpoint. The composition is impeccable as are the colours of the land and buildings ~ just not 100% convinced about the colour of the sky. Kind regards, Chris Link to comment
henrimanguy 0 Posted July 8, 2004 I could have totaly love this photo but I am not sure to appreciate the foreground almost completely occupied by this grey unaesthetic and roof. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted July 8, 2004 Thanks Kim! Chris, thanks - I find matching the sky to a forground so that it looks totally convincing is very difficult. I think the colour of the sky here and the light and reflections have all been heavily PS'ed so it is not surprising to me you are not 100% convinced! Henri, I agree the roof is more dramtic than aesthetically pleasing! Link to comment
raffaele 0 Posted July 9, 2004 Great visual angle and powerful dramatic sky! Bravissimo! Link to comment
andreasalini 0 Posted July 10, 2004 I love the point of view, but I agreed on the sky.... too much unrealistic.... in anycase great idea! Link to comment
baldurbirgis 0 Posted July 11, 2004 Nicely done. The only thing is that the towers seems to be a little tilted to the left which can be easily fixed. Otherwise, very good. Link to comment
ljk 0 Posted July 12, 2004 As mentioned above, both the sky and the perspective make this an interesting shot...good work, Colin! Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted July 12, 2004 Thank you Raffaele, Andrea, baldur and Linda! Baldur, the whole cathedral is on a very soft piece of ground that used to be an island in the middle of a huge flooded area called the Fens. Nothing in the building is straight so it is difficult making it all look vertical. There used to be a similar small tower to the right of the main tower but they fell down! The place I stood to take the photo also was rebuilt after it fell down many centuries ago. Link to comment
baldurbirgis 0 Posted July 13, 2004 Colin, thank you for the explanation. Compared to how good photographer you are, I should have figured this out myself. Regards, Baldur Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted July 17, 2004 Baldur, thanks for the compliment! Angel Luis, thanks for taking time to comment - regards Colin Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted July 27, 2004 Colin, I don't know how I have missed that unusual very interesting image. Two very different lined constructions, The gray that leads you right " into" the cathedral, and the sky colors behind that are as a color " answer" to the roof that brings you in....so very good.
