Reef at Sunset

This evening the tide was too high to find and include any close-up foreground shots, so took a few of these zoomed in wave action/reef type shots.

Any comments positive or negative are always very much appreciated,

Yet another very beautiful seascape that you've added to your collection, Steven. Wonderful composition, scene, and colors. To me, this is a fine example of how the "rule of thirds" is not really a rule and certainly not an absolute, but rather a guide that does not always need to be applied.

Sea and Sky hold equal interest, so the central horizon is not a problem for me. Perhaps the sun a bit more to the left... but...it is a beautiful image. I can see myself there. Isn't that what a good image does? Bring the viewer in?

Steven! What can I tell you are an exceptional photographer!I wish I have seen this like you did..! Choice of shutter speed is great, Velvia's saturation is visible here.Would love to experiment with that film...great job as usual...proving you skill and taste again and again!

Nice color, Steve. But I am like the composition of other images better. The image lacks strong focal point such strong foreground details such as textures in the sand, interesting rock formations, leading lines or a silhouette. IMO, cropping the image just to follow the rule of thirds will do little to imrpove this image due to the above mentioned reasons...Just my 2c.

Thanks Jay, I was trying something a little different here than my usual, to try and simpify the composition and hopefully give that peaceful easy feeling.(: My intention was to compose the water runing off the reef to the right of the image, which I see as a line that leads out to the wave on the left and then on to the sun, but your right maybe it isnt strong enough? This is certainly different than my norm and interested in more opinions regarding this.

Thank you for all the comments.

Makes me wan't to move back to California. Simple yet powerfull. The ocean is very humbling and exhilerating and belongs to everyone.

I see what you are trying to do here...Perhaps there is not enough differentiation (by contrast or by shape) between the rocks and the water to readily pick that out.

I don't think there's a negative comment that can be said about this photograph, It's just a work of art and you deserve my respect.

I haven't followed the adjustments closely, Steven, but this latest version has a pleasing painting-like quality to it. Very nice!

When I do my initial edit many times my eyes tend to lean toward oversaturation for some reason.(: Sometimes I stay with it and others like this one I tend to back it off after looking at it for a couple days, getting a few comments, or seeing it in print. My first edit was to desaturate and the second revision was to bring out more contrast in the foreground water. I think I like it better, but I think I may also desaturate a little more.
