Castlerigg Stones

ian cameron

It is very difficult to get a different shot at this iconic spot in the Lake District. I didn't try. The golden evening light kissing the stones and softly lighting the bracken clad hills rising behind was all the incentive I needed to take the shot.

An iconic scene in the Lake district. The light was soft and golden

on this beautiful September evening. Hope you like it.

One of the best shots I've seen of this much photographed place (and a lot better than I've ever managed!)

This is a fantastic shot - the soft light is perfect, great foreground interest and end to end sharpness. Just one question: was there no other way to compose to avoid cutting the left most stone down the middle?

I honestly can't remember, but I can tell you that I am usually very careful with regard to composition so I am tempted to say that there probably wasn't a way of getting this one in or out of shot without further overlap elsewhere.

Did you play with the colors at all? The colors seem off some how, but that makes the picture more interesting.

imperessive shot...Only thing is the stone cut into two that distract me a little bit...but i cannot withstand 7/7!

I agree about losing the stone at the left that's cut in half, but otherwise nice simple composition and light.

I would have cropped so the left stone wasn't visible, I love this place, I will upload my own shot of these stones soon, very nice.

An outstanding image - amazing sharpness and saturation. Do you put this down to the larger format or the scanner (my sharpest slides seem to come out as muddy scans!).

Scott makes a very good point regarding the composition,.....but I'm loving the quality of the color here,....very unique !!!!

The colours are as near as possible a match for my velvia transparency as viewed on a corrected light box.

I agree that the stone on the left is an annoyance. There might have just been room to crop it out although this may have given the impression that the stone circle was complete with the viewpoint selected.

Good you didn't try, Ian. The image is already so beautiful that having something better would be difficult to stand so taken I am by this one!

Great lighting and tones. Everytime I've been there it's been pooring down. No surprise in the Lakes, but you got this one just right. Wainright would have been proud.

this is one of the most beautiful scenics I've seen on this site and one of the most unique. the colors just really go together well.

Ian, very nice light here. However, I feel the overall composition is a bit crowded, almost claustrophobic. I think I'd prefer this not to be square (I realize you shot this with a 6x7), and have a little space to breathe to either the right or left. Also, I don't like the one stone being cut off on the left. These reservations aside, you've captured these in terrific light and this is a very fine. I've photographed standing stones in England, Ireland, and Portugal, and the light here is much better than when I was shooting.

I love the green, brown tones, sky, and composition. Beauty to my eyes. Good work! I have never seen the classical shots you refer to but I do like your shot on its own merit.
