"Fly Ball"

LenMarriott

Handheld @ f11, Auto exposure. Heavily cropped from original full frame. One excited fan thought the fielder couldn't see the ball & was pointing it out to him. What a ball fan I am, I don't remember who was the away-team but I do remember that the Jays won this one. Best, LM.

Thought the day was going to be overcast so I loaded up with Superia

200. The clouds parted, the sun came out, & my high contrast film

killed me.......well, almost. I waited till one was hit my way &

then quickly tripped the shutter as the fans all stood up in

anticipation. Your comments or critiques are most welcome, your

ratings somewhat less so:) Best, LM.

I actually like the contrast ... the silhouette feel to the fans. The colors are not spectacular, though. Did you have any thoughts about converting to B&W?

Lou Ann, I agree, unspectacular colours &, never wanting to disappoint, I present the desaturated (channel mixer, 100% blue filter)version. Any further thoughts? Best, LM.

Good work, Len. It does seem to work better in B&W.

Yes, this is a fine shot of the 1927 Yankees and the Babe is having trouble making it to second, much less to the plate.

Actually, the B&W version has a Henri Cartier Bresson feel. It reminds of many of his people's back shots that reveal the environment, the happenings and puts the viewer right in the middle of the action.

Lovely capture. Was the scan faulty for the color version? Would a re-scan and color-balancing in PS help?

Abby, Thanks. Pretty sophisticated critique from an 8 or 9 year old. Thanks for placing me in the same league as one of the masters of photography. I guess they set the standard we all strive for. In this shot I did do some thinking about it before I pressed the shutter. I thought " Wait until someone hits a home run in this direction & don't take it before everyone stands up in anticipation of perhaps catching the ball." While not quite what I had in mind I'm satisfied that I caught the 'decisive moment'. I admit to rushing this to post by perhaps not working it to it's best level before posting. Yes, it could be improved. Best, LM.

No. I definately prefer the colour version and with these very colours. It is a very charming image.

A nicely captured moment - your anticipation and timing worked well here. Everything feels in motion. I prefer the colour version though the scan does look a little 'funky' (a bit soft?).

For once I prefer the color version. Perhaps because of the high contrast and strong colors.

One could almost imagine the fans were facing a huge screen, I like this "strangeness".

As for composition, DOF and decisive moment, it's very good.
