Fireworks 1

Very nicely done. Good exposure and composition on a difficult subject.

The first of many fireworks in Montreal city! Not my best picture but

still one of the good ones!

The fireworks (the top one) is not good, - check the exposure - I never took fireworks shot, but I guess you needed a faster shutter speed, at the cost of illumating the people seeing the fireworks, - which I think is okay.

Actually, the exposure was pretty good one that one... If you really want me to show you an overexposed shot, I can show you one! (It's simply pure white)

 

You actually want a long shutter speed for fireworks to make them make trails in the sky (I was stopping down all the way to f/22 to get a 20second exposure sometimes, and even then it got overexposed sometimes)

Really ? Pls excuse my knowledge here. As I said that I never shot fireworks so I don't really know if you should use fast shutter speed or slow.

 

I used to think it should be fast cause otherwise the fireworks would go blur like the one at the top of this photo..But I might be wrong, and it makes sense to use long shutter speed as well (as you said) to look the fireworks like a trail. But I think there's an optimum value of the shutter speed where both are balanced. I mean, the value where the fireworks are not blurr (like the one at the top) and at the same time looks like a trail (the two works at the bottom of this photo). Am I not right ?

yeah, I agree the white one at the top could have used a faster shutter speed, but this one was really weird looking, not your ordinary firework there!

so hard to get with the apertures of the lens you were using! if you don't have it, the 50 mm. 1.8 Canon lens is great, could help in these situations. thanks for your comment on one of my pics.

I have the 50mm f/1.8 but I mainly use apertures around f/8-f/11 when photographying fireworks, so that's why I chose this lens. It could work for handheld fireworks photography, but I don,t think it'd give a nice effect =)

yes, i can see the need for that now, of course, cuz the bursts are across the sky, not in one place relative to the camera. thanks for pointing that out.

Si je peux me permettre une astuce pour les " Long Time Exposure " Sometimes i use "B" mode or the longest exposure time available and just let the lens cover on ... so i can pull it when the firework is rising and put it back while there is no fireworks... using a tripod under calm condition as you all probably know... this way you can have like 5 or 6, maybe up to 10 fireworks(depending on others sources of light) on the same image without overexposition or Photoshop Work ... Well hope this trick helps the ones who did'nt know it if there is so ?
