Consider basic rules: rule of thirds, level horizon!

I appreciate your advice about the rule of thirds, I think if I brought the camera to a lower angle to get land on the lower part of photograph would only reveal more black figure. The interest point here is clearly only the horizon's colors.

Now that I know a little more about photography I must say that my initial picture did follow the rule of thirds. In fact the ground in the bottom gives perspective and the interesting points -small ship, horizon, little island- are in the middle grids of the photo and leveled nicely. Your cropping has too much sky and does not follow the rule of thirds. I disagree with your initial critique but happy you did it anyway.
