Oasis in spring. Jabel Sarhro, Morocco.

salvatore.mele

Shot at sunset in an oasis where we found water in our five-days (no mules!) walk across the wild Jebel Sarhro mountains in Morocco. After a day amidst dry rocks, the bright green of the almond tree and crop were almost intoxicating for the eyes.

This is lovely. I like the contrast between the fertile field and the barren hills. I would have positioned the tree more towards the right - but no bother.

Wernher,

thanks for your comment. The contrast was striking, and even more so after a hard day walking in that unforgiving and dry climate. I still remember the water hole to be shared with dromedars, mules and others...and the effort it took to sanitize the water.

I thought quite a while about the position of the tree, and I finally decided to put it slightly off centre... It seemed more unbalanced on the side.

Cheers,

I happen to like this picture of mine quite a lot: it's one of those

which eventually made it on the walls. I am hereby happy to share it

with the other photo.net-ters and hear some unbiased criticism:

- Is the tree too central?

- What about the colours?

- Anything to change in the composition?

Thanks for all your valuable input!

Great contrast between green foreground and the brown rocks in the background, also the rocks nicely frame the tree.

I like the contrast between the verdant green foreground and the arid mountains -- but would have placed the tree farther right. Rule of thirds and all that.

Folks, thanks for all the comments!

  • Michele : Is is a HONOUR to get such review from a master like you!
  • Martin: Thanks for your kind words!
  • Mike: Thanks for your insight. As I mentioned above, I had thought of putting the tree quite more on the right, but the final effect was not that convincing after all.

I like this shot a lot, really pleasant colors, good composition. Though I'd try to move the tree to the left of the center and maintain a diagonal balance with the rock clif in the right upper "golden intersection". But I wasn't there, so might be this was the best composition chosen in real world.

Anyway I like it a lot...

I like it very much. I would place the tree more on the right. I think it`s to centered. I like the contrast between the grass and the sky. So nice to look.

Aaron, if this works as an image you should have seen what it meant for real: days of walking in a rocky desert, with the Sahara as a target, in full autonomy without mules and carrying all our food. We had just cam down a gorge below those rock faces and had not seen a drop of water all day long. It looked like Mars. Red everywhere and suddenly this intoxicating green. I am happy the message went through.

Getting water in the oasis, sharing the same water hole with an assertive camel, is all another story...
