Although this might have been taken with your lens set at 70mm, the shot has definitely got a wide-angle feel to it.

Good time of the day to get this, as I wouldn't be surprised to see this place crawl with tourists, later on (despite some concerns about security in Indonesia).

Also a good time of day for getting the even quality of light, on what looks to be the start of another steamy one for the Borobudur. My wife's been here with a friend and loved it! So, I've seen plenty of images of this place, but your's looked different.

Many thanks for adding your thoughts on one of my recent uploads. Your visit is much appreciated and I'll have a look at your portfolio, when time permits... Cheers,

Eagle-eyed Peter is of course right, it was not the 70-200 (which I still own) but rather the longly-sold 28-70... The caption is now fixed.

As for the good hour, after a hour or so enjoing sunrise, swarms of people arrived. As for security, it was believed to be relatively safe in late 2000, with no terrorism yet and political situation more stable... even though at the end of Ramadan, a few days later, some clashes between young catholics and muslim took place in Lombok...

There are dozen of stupas on the top terrace of the Borodubur in East

Jave island, Indonesia.

Among many non-descript shots, this is the one I like the most.

Comments on the composition and crop are very, very much welcome.

What a wonderful shot! I'm envious! I was only able to go to Borobudur in the hot mid-day sun, and hence missed the soft lighting that you took advantage of so nicely here. Your whole Indonesian folder is fantastic!

Hi Salvatore, I rated photos purely based on my own perceptions, hope that won't give you any hard feelings. Turning back to your photo, the first impression to me is that the stupas on the left and right is really annoying and the photo is a bit tight and why do you crop the picture in this aspect ratio ? Seems that the sky is a bit foggy on that day. Overall, the picture lacks a point of interest to me though someone may have good memories if one's been there. FYI, I am just a passer-by and is definitely a beginner in photography, cheers !

I really wanted to go to Borobudur but couldn't find a photo partner to go with. I understand the drive from Solo is also quite a distance so I didn't want to go by myself. A pity really. Nice image but could do with a person in it for perspective and size.

Alec, I managed to convince for a very reasonable price a small tour-operator in Yodjakarta to go a bit earlier than usual [he was happy since then we also came back earlier than usual]. At any rate you are not allowed in before a given time, which I now forgot, so the trick was just to arrive right then.

As for the person to give the scale, there was a very stupid timer-picture of me sitting on that step...whose print went directly in the trash-bin and I couldn't be asked of scanning... Should you be hell bent to see it, though, I could try!

This is no Angkor, though, so no safran-robe clad monks happily tour the ruins round the clock...

Folks, thanks for the comments.

Dillan, Laszlo, thanks for your kind words

Sky man, thanks for your -requested- comments. If the picture is "bad" for you for personal aesthetic reasons "De gustibus non disputandum est", so no point in discussing it any further. At any rate, the fog adds and does not lessen the picture, IMHO and the tight crop and the stupas at the two extremes wanted to give a feeling on how crowded in stone the place was amidst the nature. But I'm quite poor in the arts department.
