Wrangell Mountains 2

aepelbacher

Taken about 2:00 p.m. Used a monopod. Adjusted and cropped in Photoshop cs. Yes, I know that 800 speed film is not optimal for landscape photography. I am working on composition and am also working within a budget. I used 400 and 800 speed film for this entire trip in Alaska merely for the flexibility ... I wanted to be able to shoot a couple of pics of a mountain then of a bear then of a building in changing weather conditions (often overcast) and with different length lenses without having to change out film. Thanks for the comments on film ... next time I go to Alaska (!!) I will take some 100 ISA with me!

It was suggested to me on a not-so-different shot of mine that I walk out and in front of the turn-out so that it didn't show up in the photo, which I am suggesting. The foreground on the right is a bit distracting for me. This seems to have a lot of noise, as well. I love how you've captured the snow on the peaks; this shot makes me want to drive/fly up next vacation. Thanks for posting, Richard

This is good! I like the way you have cropped it into a panorama. The snow capped peaks rising above the haze are good.

I honestly wasn't expecting a decent reception on this one ... it was more for perspective for the previous image, as well as some of the upcoming few shots. I know that it's too grainy (you're right ... I NEED to go back with some Velvia 100's and 50's.) And, I chopped off a LOT of the roadside "pull out" ... but any more and I felt like the pic would be ALL sky!!

The panorama looks nice (personally I'd prefer to have a little bit more of the road, but thats OK). The problem is an overall strong pinkish cast that needs to be corrected.

Lou Ann, your decision to crop this was correct; it strengthens the image considerably. I have to agree with Vlad's comment concerning the pink cast, I see it too. And I'm shocked, absolutely SHOCKED that anyone would even consider using 800 ISO in a landscape! (Just kidding Lou Ann :0) It is a good photograph. Regards.

It may well be Lou Ann. It is not a strong cast but it is noticeable in the transitions of snow to midground of the mountains. I use the Gretag Eye-One colorimeter at home and highly recomend it (about $250). The use of such a device is really mandatory if you want your images to be consistently accurate.

I calibrate my CRT monitor now about every other month, or just before I have a lot of critical work to do. Previously, photograhs that I had worked on before acquiring the Eye-One show a color cast just as some of yours do. I tried the Adobe Gamma utility supplied with Photoshop, but I was just fooling myself with that.

The Digital Darkroom Forum has an extensive knowledge base of articles dealing with monitor calibration and colorspace. Regards.

I like open road shots that are going somewhere, Lou Ann, and maybe that is why I and others like this. The muted colors don't bother me, but look rather natural to me.

Crop was an excellent idea Lou Ann.

I read that you took the picture at 2pm, looking at the color of the snowy mountains I'd imagined it was just before sunset... thanks for introducing Alaska to me, ... I never been there (...yet!:o))

Hello Lou Ann

There is something wonderfully peaceful about this image - sort of a road to nowhere, yet clearly the distant mountains are "somewhere". Gosh, what a wonderful world we live in, and what wonderful photographs in this folder.

I will be back soon.

Regards, Nick.
