More Fireweed, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska

aepelbacher

Taken around 9:45 a.m. Used a monopod. Adjusted and cropped in Photoshop cs. Yes, I know that 800 speed film is not optimal for landscape photography. I am working on composition and am also working within a budget. I used 400 and 800 speed film for this entire trip in Alaska merely for the flexibility ... I wanted to be able to shoot a couple of pics of a mountain then of a bear then of a building in changing weather conditions (often overcast) and with different length lenses without having to change out film. Thanks for the comments on film ... next time I go to Alaska (!!) I will take some 100 ISA with me!

Pretty flowers. The only one thing I don't understand is the tree in the distance. It draws more attention than the main flower. That is why I rate aesthetics only 5.

Thank you, Ales. I guess that the tree in the distance adds balance to the otherwise empty sky... What do you think of this possible crop? Does the tree make more sense here?

I like your second crop better than the first one, Lou Ann. I think I would have liked this better if you had the flowers higher in the foreground, by dropping your shooting angle. Of course, you would then likely be laying flat on the ground and I don't know if that was a possibility! :) (By that, I don't mean physically, but if there were ants, bugs, snakes, etc., that you wouldn't want to do that!).

LOL, Kim! I know what you meant! Actually, while I was PSing this one, I had been thinking that I wished I had taken one from a HIGHER vantage point (like climbing on top of my truck). It would have given a better sense of the PURPLE!! The reason I uploaded this original crop for critique is because I like the sense of the WIDTH of the field and the extent of the purple flowers ... in an image with a panoramic feel.

I like the original crop, looks like a semi panoramic, very fine contrast between flowers and sky.

I agree about the panoramic idea, but having the errant flower and tree at the end tips the balance I think. Although I do like the 'scale' comparison of the flower against the tree. Is there enough resolution to make a vertical crop just featuring the right third of the image?

You know, Ray ... you hit on the one thing that really DID bother me about this shot ... too much green at the bottom ... but I couldn't figure out the balance, so I left it there. I like your crop! A bit more off the top, and it would really be panoramic!

I am glad, Lou Ann. You have a lot of green there, but the bottom green was a bit un-organized, so to speak. Cutting the bottom and right sides out can make it cleaner. Simplicity sometimes makes a stronger presentation in photography.

Lou, nice shot. Great discussion. I liked all of the different ideas put forth. Especially Rays and Hannas. The feedback makes us all better.

Hi Lou Ann, nice shot, I like Ray's crop, as the tree was a distruction IMO. Pnina

In a way this image reminds me of Tapestry. I love the image. Actually, I like the original better than the cropped version.
