Mt. Iliamna

aepelbacher

Taken around 9:45 a.m. Used a monopod. Adjusted and cropped in Photoshop cs. Yes, I know that 800 speed film is not optimal for landscape photography. I am working on composition and am also working within a budget. I used 400 and 800 speed film for this entire trip in Alaska merely for the flexibility ... I wanted to be able to shoot a couple of pics of a mountain then of a bear then of a building in changing weather conditions (often overcast) and with different length lenses without having to change out film. Thanks for the comments on film ... next time I go to Alaska (!!) I will take some 100 ISA with me!

Lou Ann, you have to go back on the shortest day of the year and see what kind of light you can get at midday.

Hello Lou Ann, nice picture; blue in front and back. But how about some cropping from the top? It would maybe be even better in that way...? BR, Ilkka

Agree with Ilkka, needs cropping from the top to move the green grass border to the lower 3rd, if the size of the scanned image permits. Also you may blow away the noisy particles in the blue sky to make it perfecto, IMHO.

Yeah, I know about the noise. It's the 800 film. I did about eighteen different things (short of using Neat Image ... I ought to try that) to get rid of the noise. I also noticed a significant difference between the print and the scan (done at the processing lab) in the contrast between the sky and the mountain, as well as the blue in the sky. I feel like I over manipulated to get it where it is here ... not sure if more would have made it better or fake-er.....

This has a lot of potential, but the noise in the sky bothers me, too. You can try selecting only the sky and using a slight blur - sometimes that helps get rid of it. I like the composition, though, especially with the flowers as a lower frame.

It is not my intention to add fuel to the choice of film matter, but you have to admit that scenes like these are indeed better recorded with a lower ISO film, like Velvia 50...

You're right ... I know ... I'll go back to Alaska someday with better compositional skills and a bigger budget and make all sorts of wonderful pictures with Velvia. In the meantime, these shots are what I have.

Hi Lou, beautiful scenery. Why not try digital too? In the long run you save and don't need to scan the pictures. Overall you'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to download and view without the hassle of processing the films.

I'm currently saving my pennies for the digital Rebel (Canon), as I've seen some great shots that it can produce ... and I can use my lenses on both cameras......

Hi LouAnn. I say keep saving those pennies. I recently acquired the 300D and I'm pretty pleased with it. I spent 5 weeks in England and didn't get up the nerve to use it until I had filled 9 CD's with my Olympus. What a difference!

Nice colors, and it is great to see not only ice, although in the distance????? I see something LOL.
