Exit Glacier 3

aepelbacher

Taken around 8:00 a.m. Used a monopod. Adjusted and cropped in Photoshop cs. Yes, I know that 800 speed film is not optimal for landscape photography. I am working on composition and am also working within a budget. I used 400 and 800 speed film for this entire trip in Alaska merely for the flexibility ... I wanted to be able to shoot a couple of pics of a mountain then of a bear then of a building in changing weather conditions (often overcast) and with different length lenses without having to change out film. Thanks for the comments on film ... next time I go to Alaska (!!) I will take some 100 ISA with me!

Returning to my up close shots of glacial ice ... I will continue to

upload several more closeup shots of this glacier this week in the

hopes of trying to figure out what the PN crowd finds to be

aesthetically pleasing. :-) Any comments or ratings are appreciated!

Great colors and patterns, due in part to the wonderfully deep shadows.

Very good, nice colors and a sensation of 3D.

I like your series on this glacier. Where you standing on the glacier or at some distance ?

I will soon submit an almost similar photo, but it is not a glacier, it is a summit in the Queyras (Alpes).

And once more thanks for you numerous ratings and comments on my photos.

One of your best about the glacier, very good colors and contrast.

This one works for me. Nice, natural abstract and the blue color contrasts nicely with the brown.

I think the lines and textures here are marvelous Lou Ann and yes it does have somewhat of an abstract flavor to it.I do think that a tad more contrast would have gave you more definition and tonal values in the colors so as to draw the viewer in more IMO.Still cool,no pun intended. And yes,a good ISO 100 emulsion would probably meet all your needs Lou Ann.

Nice shot, Lou Ann. You did an excellent job with the post-processing of your scan to maintain good detail/texture in the ice. I am guessing that these glacier ice structures are immense in size. If I am right, then the one thing that is perhaps missing from this scene is something to provide the viewer with a perspective of size/scale.

Steve - I was going for abstract here. For perspective, take a look at the link in the first comment on this page.

A clever and attractive crop (in camera) and a wonderful selection of tones and contrast from the black of the lower right thru to full reflected light. Placing the darkness and the dirt stained ice formation in the lower right was compositionally sound I think. Good shadow detail too. If this was shot using 800ASA film I'm astonished as well as impressed, because the image contains outstanding clarity in the soft blue crystal line formation which doesn't degrade as I move from viewing the medium to the large.

Very nice in terms of graphics and light. Some people, me included, would probably feel that the "inklike" blue and the dirty parts are not really pleasant to look at. So why not do a well balalanced b&w with this, using separated channels to achieve exactly the tonal rendition you'd be happy with ?
