Underwater Blessing

f1-fanatic

I am sorry I have no details.. this was taken when I was in my teens. I found the negative and scanned it from that. There is light retouching to clean scratches from over the years.. Moreover, after recieving comments regarding the brightness I have decided to bring this image back into PS7 to correct color and brightness/contrast lost in the scanning process. The originally posted, unmanipulated, image can be found below.Photo taken with Nikonos V rented from Stephen Frink and scanned with an Epson RX500.

I found this while going through my stuff.. years after it was

taken. The image was scanned on an Epson RX500 from the original

negative. As always, any comments, suggestions or ratings would be

greatly appreciated.

Thanks -N

.. for a teenager to shoot like this speaks of immense talent .. the teenager being moody left photography sometime later only to fall back to his old flame when he was a man...!

Do you have any more underwater shots from that time? May be you have some more good stuff which you have forgotten about. In any case, I think you should borrow that Nikonos V again, and return to the deep. As to this particular shot, I suggest you run that again through PS and eliminate that black spot on the bottom right. It's a little distracting. You should have left some more "breathing space" on the left, as you did on the right. Any photo will look better if you don't cut hands and fingers. Otherwise the photo looks great. Have you tried getting a little more contrast out of it? Because of the nature of the photo, it being a silhouette, you can't lose much detail doing that because there are no details to lose and you may get a more dramatic effect.

Norman, I like your edited version better with the blues. It works for me and that's what I rated actually. I would give the original a 5/5.

Believe me it nevertheless still sticks out and distinguishes itself. Before I clicked on the thumbnail in the Top Photos folder, I thought of the title "Underwater Prophet." Good show, I'm going to look into your p'folio and see what other bits of magic are hiding in there.

Wow.. I don't know what to say other than thank you both very much and that I will go back and see if I have any other negatives.

On a technical note.. I was surprised to hear that you could see the fish on the lower right of this image...

After some reading and investigation I have learned that my monitor here at home wasn't calibrated for proper gamma. Here is a great site with instructions if anyone needs it as did I.

I look forward to returning to the water one day.. Now I have a purpose.

Thank you both for your time and kind words and for helping me become better at this. -N

This is the original, unmanipulated, image from which I scanned with my Epson RX500 (printer/scanner. I want to thank Amar Khoday and Tuhin Saha for their comments regarding my original image as well as what I would say is the best compliment I have received to date. Also I want to thank Johannes Felten for pointing me in the right direction and realizing that my monitor was so out of calibration that what I saw was in no way what was being represented here on photo.net. I have calibrated my monitor to the best of my ability and resubmitted the photo. Again, thank you all. -N

I went to college in South Florida and because I spent the bulk of my time (when not in school) SCUBA diving both teaching and diving for fun. The only problem was it was getting a little boring going to the same reef systems for years on end sometimes twice a day. On this occasion I had some friends with me who were staying at my home for their spring break and we took a trip down to Key Largo to dive at Pennekamp State Park and one of the dives was "Christ of the Abyss"... I had rented a camera from a local reatiler and very well known underwater photographer Stephen Frink and was given the crash course on the Nikonos V system with strobe and show two rolls that day.. this was the only shot that I really liked. I got back into photography about a two months ago and was looking for some of my things and stumbled across a stack of old negatives in a metal box and this was one of them.

Here is a link to the statue in the photo as well as the park in which it resides.

Boy does this image bring back memories. I dove Pennekamp many times during my college days and sat just where you did shooting this picture.

Tnx

Norman, this is a fantastic shot, totally original excellent composition. It think it is spiritually moving, moody and thought provoking. For a teenager to get a shot like this is really quite amazing! I wonder if you realised the impact that it would have on the viewer when you took it? Thanks very much for commenting on my photos, I found your comments very valuable. Been having a look at your portfolio, kept me busy for quite a while. You have some stunning shots. I particularly like the F1 shots. Being an F1 Fan I want to see more. Intend to look at them again later and will likely comment on one or two.

May your lens always be clean!

Cheers

John

This is an interesting shot, and a very good one.

I just looked at this image and made the connection (I'm a little slow on the up-take sometimes:). This has to be the same statue that is pictured on BT's cd cover. I guess it must get photographed by many. You did it justice.

Thank you for the kind words. What may I ask what BT is? It's definitely the same statue... In fact it's almost the same angle! Good eye Bill.
