Valdez 7

aepelbacher

Used a monopod. Adjusted and cropped in Photoshop cs. Yes, I know that 800 speed film is not optimal for landscape photography. I am working on composition and am also working within a budget. I used 400 and 800 speed film for this entire trip in Alaska merely for the flexibility ... I wanted to be able to shoot a couple of pics of a mountain then of a bear then of a building in changing weather conditions (often overcast) and with different length lenses without having to change out film. Thanks for the comments on film ... next time I go to Alaska (!!) I will take some 100 ISA with me!

I like the clouds in this photo, especially the ones on the left - they are an essential counterpoint to your gorgeous mountain subject.

On a fine day with clouds in the sky, I would prefer having dramatic, sensational, thrilling clouds to plain, fluffy, patchy ones. They can be the main subject by themselves.

That's why I am overjoyed in seeing your Valdez photo as I recall having taken one photo similar in subject and composition:

In my photo I used an ISO 100 setting but deliberately underexposed to successfully capture the full range of tones and shades in the clouds.

I like the clouds, Lou Ann, in part because mountains have more clouds than other places, and in part because they cast the shadows that make the foreground more interesting--in addition to which the strong white upper part of the picture adds a dimension that I believe would be lacking if it were all deep blue.

One of the striking things about mountains in Alaska is how low the treeline is. When I was living in Quito, almost dead on the equator, it appeared that the treeline was around 12,000 feet, although I never took an altimeter with me to check.

This is such beautiful country!

I like the clouds too. If anything I would like more clouds rather than less for a more stormy look. I like the colours of the mountain slopes.

Thanks, y'all, for the positive feedback. Frankly this is a shot that I almost didn't upload because I don't like the soft focus and the haze. Glad everyone else enjoys it!! :-)

Steve - I am trying to upload my pics from Alaska in a chronological order (as I took them) ... it's due to my type-A personality ... it's the easiest way for me to stay organized and to remember what I have uploaded and what I haven't yet. ;-)

I like this one, too. Funny, the ones I almost don't post seem to generate positive comments, also.

I love the light in this one, and the beautiful clouds.

Great shot, well done. I agree with Perry regard clouds ... I'm also frequently using 1 or 1/2 stop less to saturate colours and sky.
